SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,529, dated December 22, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN RoLLo ALLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Boston, in the county of Sufiolk'and State of Mas- 5 sachusetts, have in vented an Improvementin Gas Stoves or Heaters, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to a novel gas stove or heater, and has for its object to provide a stove or heater with which a maximum heating effect may be obtained with a minimum consumption of gas. The particular features of this invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gas stove or heater embodying this invention; Fig. 2, a vertical central section of the stove or heater shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a cross-section on the line 3 3, Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a modification to be referred to, and Fig. 5 a sectional detail to be referred to. In the embodiment of the invention herein shown a gas-supply pipe to, having, as shown, a tip or nozzle b, communicates with a vertically-arranged tube a, which is open at its lower end and is providedat its upper end with a cap or head (1. The upper end of the tube 0 is extended through the bottom wall e of a chamberf, formed by a larger tube g, which is open at its upper end and has atv tached to it a disk h, provided at its outer edge with an annularlip or upturned flange t', which cooperates with a like flange or lipj on a disk k, of smaller diameter than the disk h, to form an annular gas outlet or passage 10, as will be described. The disk 70 is supported above the disk It to leave a chamber or space 1, and for this purpose the disk lc-has attached to its under side a plurality of rectangular-shaped pieces m, which are arranged on the disk It, so that their vertical portions extend into the tube 9 and serve as centering devices for the disk is, so as to prevent lateral movement thereof, and thereby insure the gas-outlet passage 10 being maintained of uniform width, with the result that an equal 0 or uniform amount of gas is consumed at all parts of the gas-outlet formed by the flanges or lips tj. The horizontal portions of the angle-pieces m rest upon the lower disk It and support the upper disk is above the same, so
as to obtain a space of uniform height between the disks. The disk It may be provided with adepressed center portion n, preferably conical in shape and arranged in line with the tube 9, so as to act as a spreader or deflector for the mixture of air and gas passing up through the said tube.
The disk It may form the bottom of a vessel or chamber 0, having a conical body portion 10, which may be-integral with the flange or lip j, as shown in Fig. 2, or which may be separate therefrom, as represented in Fig. 4. The body portion p is preferably provided at its upper end with an outwardly-extended annular flange g, which extends over a cylinder or casing 1", which forms, with the body portion of the vessel 0, an annular combustionchamber s,within which the gas is consumed.
The cylinder or casing r is provided with perforations t, through which the heated air may pass. The cylinder or casing r is secured to a rim or ring 12, which is fastened to a suitable framework 13, which may be of any suitable or desired shape or configuration, and, as herein shown, the bottom e of the tube 9 is secured to said framework by the screws 14 or otherwise.
The framework 13 may be attached to a ring 15, having a plurality of legs 16, which may be provided with wheels or rollers 17, as herein shown.
The operation of the stove or heater herein shown may be briefly described as follows: The gas from the supply-tip b ascends into the tube c'and draws with it a quantity of air through the open mouth of said tube. The 0 air and gas are mixed within the tube 0 and pass out therefrom through the perforations or outlet-openings 18 in the tube a into the larger chamber f. The mixture of air and gas flows up through the chainberfand passes into 5 the space I and out therefrom through the annular passage 10,Where it is ignited and burns with a perfectly blue flame, which heats the body portion of the vessel 0. The annular flame created by the combustion of the gas is- I00 suing from the passage 10 impinges against the conical body portion of the vessel or chamher 0 and intensely heats the same. The consumed gases pass through the perforations t in the surrounding cylinder or casing r. The flame in the combustion-chambers draws air up through the opening formed by the ring 12. The vessel or chamber 0 may be used for heating or for cooking purposes.
I have herein shown the head of the mixing-tn be as imperforate; but it is evident that it may be provided with one or more perforations, if desired.
I claim 1. In an apparatus of the class described, in combination, a gas-supply pipe, a mixingtube communicating therewith and provided with gas-outlets in its upper end, a larger tube surrounding the upper end of said mixing-tube, a disk attached to said larger tube and provided with a lip or flange, a smaller disk provided with a lip or flange cooperating with the lip or flange of the disk attached to said tube to form a gas-outlet passage, a vessel having a conical body portion extended upward from the flange or lip of the smaller disk, and a foraminous casing surrounding said body portion and cooperating therewith to form a combustion-chamber, substantially as described.
2. In an apparatus of the class described, in combination, a disk provided with an up turned flange, and with a substantially centraldepending tubular portion, a second disk of smaller diameter located within the flange of the first-mentioned disk and provided with an upturned flange which forms with the flange on the flrstmentioned disk a gas-outlet passage, means interposed between the said disks to support the smaller disk and separate it from the larger disk, and a gassupply pipe communicating with the tubular portion of the larger disk, substantially as described.
3. In an apparatus of the class described, in combination, a disk provided with a depending tubular portion and with an upturned lip or flange, a smaller disk provided with an upturned lip or flange forming with the flange of the first-mentioned disk a gasoutlet passage, means interposed between said disks for centering the smallerdisk with relation to the larger disk, a mixing-tube extended into the depending tubular portion of the larger disk, and a gas-supply pipe communicating with said mixing-tube, substantially as described.
4. In an apparatus of the class described, in combination, a disk provided with a depending tubular portion and with an upturned lip or flange, a smaller disk provided with an upturned lip or flange forming with the flange of the first-mentioned disk a gasoutlet passage, angle-pieces secured to the bottom of the smaller disk and having the vertical portions extended into the depending tubular portion of the larger disk and their horizontal portions resting on said larger disk to form a space between said disks, and a gas-supply pipe communicating with said tubular portion, substantially as described.
5. In an apparatus of the class described, in combination, an upper disk provided with an upturned lip or flange and with a conical central portion forming a deflector, a lower disk of larger diameter than the upper disk and provided with an upturned flange or lip cooperating with the flange or lip on the smaller disk to form a gas-outlet passage, a substantially central tubular portion depending from said larger disk, means to separate said disks, a tube of smaller diameter communicating with said depending tubular portion, and a gas-supply communicating with said tube, substantially as described.
