HlNGE.
TMFEGIIAECATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,275, dated December 15,1903.
Application filed October 1, 1903. Serial No. 175,309. (No model.)
10 all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, HENRY TSCHERNING, a citizen of the United States of America, rcsidinn at l reeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring- Hinges, of which the following is aspecitication.
My invention relates to certain improvements in spring-hinges, having to do particularly with the form and arrangement of a spring therein, by reason of which said spring is made easy of application to and removable from the hinge and is held therein against movement in all undesirable directions by its peculiar form and combination with the hold inn means employed in connection therewith.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings by means of four figures, of which Figure l is a face view of my improved hinge in its preferred form. Fig. 2 is an elevation. Fig. 3is a horizontal section looking downward upon a plane 3 3 of Fig, l, and Fig. 4 is a similar section looking downward upon a plane i d ot'l ig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, a hinge A is made up of two leaves Ct at, pivoted together by means of rivets B O passing through the cars a a upon the leaf Ct and the ears a (t u pon theleaf ct. A vertical cylindrical socket c is provided at'the left-hand side of the left;v hand leaf, and a wire spring D is secured in said socket by means of a vertical portion d, turns to the right below said socket to form a spring-coil cl, and extends upward from the left-hand side of said coil to the upper portion of the hinge, where it is connected by means of a small link E with a perforated tongue a on the leaf a. The tension of the spring is such as to pull upon the link E and to press the coil d against the leaf ct. This holds the spring securely in place, and it will be readily seen that the insertion of'the spring in its place in the hinge may be effected very easily and readily by thrusting the part (1 of the wire into the socket a and then crowding the upper end of the spring to the right sufficiently to hook it into the link E. After being once put in this position the tension of the spring itself holds it against movement away from the leaf to, and the link E and the car (1 at the lower end of the leaf a, both oppose lougitudinal movement of the spring in a direction opposite to that in which it was placed in the hinge.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a spring-hinge, the combination with the pivoted leaves, one of which has a ngitudinal socket at its outer edge and the other of which has an eye at its inner edge, of a spring having an arm connected with said eye, a coil on the side of said arm toward the other leaf and a second arm crossing the first and provided beyond the same with a portion bent to enter said socket, whereby the tension of the spring holds the coil against the leaf to which it is secured. v
In witness whereof I have signed the above application for Letters Patent, at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, this th day of September, A. D.. 1903.
HENRY TSCHERNING.
