OLUSURE l-"Ofi BOTTLES, JARS, OR OTHER VE-SSELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 747,269, dated December 15, 1903. Application filed July 28,1903. Serial No. 167.333. (No model.)
a vessel-closure, such as a cork, and with-.
drawing device therefor, the body of which device is attached or secured to the outer or exposed face of the closure and has an extension that is wrapped over one end of the closure across the inner or concealed face.
thereof and then over the opposite side or edge of the closure, and the free end of which is left exposed in position to be grasped and drawn upon to withdraw the closure from the vessel.
The invention is illustrated in the accom-- panying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspectiveview of a closure provided with my improved withdrawing device. Fig. 2 is a view showing such closure and applied withdrawing device about to be inserted into the mouth of a jar. Fig. 3 is a view illustrating said closure and applied withdrawing device inserted into and closing the mouth of'a jar. Fig. 4 is a view illustrating the action of Withdrawing the closure from the mouth of a jar.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral l designates a vessel-closure, preferably a cork, of approximately disk-like formation and suitably fashionedto close the mouth of the vessel into which it is to be introduced.
The numeral 2 designates the body of the closure-withdrawing device, which preferably and as shown corresponds in shape to that of the outline of the closure. It is attached to the outer or exposed face of the closure in any suitable way, as by glue or cement, (with which it may be previously supplied or with which it may be provided at the time of attachment to the closure,) and is provided with an extension, preferably and as shown, in the form of a relatively thin and elongated strip 3, the length of which must be in excess of the diameter of the closure and the height of the two sides thereof. This extension-strip is wrapped over one side or edge of the closure, as illustrated at 4, is then extended across the inner or concealed. face of the closure, as shown at 5, thence over the opposite side or edge of the closure, as at 6, and the extremity thereof is left free to serve as a pulling end 7 by drawing or pulling on which the closure is withdrawn. I
It will be seen that in the act of withdrawing a closure from a jar or other vessel the free pulling end 7 is drawn upon, lifting the adjacent edge of the closure, as illustrated in Fig. 4, and by the continued pulling the closure is entirely withdrawn.
The body portion 2 of the withdrawing device, attached to the exposed or outer surface of the closure, may be utilized as a label or for the purpose of printing advertising matter thereon, and it will be apparent that the entire withdrawing device may consist of a label of any suitable kind having an extension 3 wrapped or folded about the side walls and edges of the closure and across its inner or concealed face, as described.
According to my invention an efiective closure-withdrawing device is provided, which in addition may serve as a suitable label or advertising medium. N0 modification or change of construction of usual manner of closure device is necessary according to my invention, as my improved closure-withdrawing device may be applied to existing constructions of closures by more attachment or application thereto without in any wise requiring any new construction of closure or modification or change of existing constructions thereof.
The closure-withdrawing device may be made of paper of sufficient stoutness or of paper lined with a strengthening fabric or of a fabric, as may be desired, or an additional layer of paper may be used for strengthening purposes.
By reason of the manner of the application of the closure-withdrawing device to a closure, as herein described, it is obvious that the force applied in the act of withdrawal does not tend to separate the withdrawing device from the closure, as would be the case if the extension were not wrapped over the edges and across the inner face of the closure, as set forth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A closure for vessels provided with a withdrawing device the body of which is secured to the outer or exposed face of said closure and is provided with an extension wrapped about the side walls of the closure and across the inner or concealed face thereof and having an exposed, free extremity to serve as a pulling end, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS W. TALIAFERRO.
