FOLDING STOOL.
I PECIFI(.H3..1IOI\l forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,204, dated December 15, 1903.
Application filed January 15, 1903. Renewed November 14, 1903. Serial No. 181,245. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. MooK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State ofPennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Stools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in folding stools; and the primary object of the invention is to construct a folding stool of the type generally known as camp-stools whereby the supporting-legs thereof may be folded in compact alinement and the seat of the stool placed longitudinally in alinement with the folded legs, whereby to produce a comparatively small bundle when the stool is in its folded form.
A further object of the invention is to provide astool of this character wherein the supporting-legs are made of telescopic sections, whereby they may be lengthened when the stool is to be used and may be telescoped to shorten when the stool is to be folded.
A still further object of the invention is to construct a stool in which the seat may be readily attached and detached from the supporting-legs and when in the attached position will be as securely held as though permanently attached to the legs.
A still further object of the invention is to so construct a stool that it will be comparatively light, yet extremely strong and durable; and with the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail referonce is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of the stool in the folded form. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the stool in the extended form and ready for use. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of a part of one of the supporting-legs and a part of the seat, showing the manner in which the latter is attached to the supporting-legs. Fig. 4 is a verticalsectional view of the hollow member of one of the supporting-legs, showing the extensible member telescoped therein. Fig.5 is a like view of a part of one of the hollow leg members, showing the telescoping section fully extended. Fig. 6
is a like view of the central hollow leg member, showing the extensible section of this leg member telescoped therein. Fig. 7 is atransverse vertical sectional view of a part of one of the hollow sections of the supporting-legs, showing a part of the telescoping section of 6 the leg and showing the manner in which the telescoping section is held extended.
To put my invention into practice, I provide three telescoping supporting-legs, and these supporting-legs are pivoted together, whereby they may fold into alinement with each other, the particular construction permitting this folding and also the telescoping of the legs being hereinafter more fully described. The supporting-legs comprise an uppertubular section and a telescoping solid section, the latter being slotted to permit its telescoping within the tubular section. The hollow tubular section 1 is the central supportingleg, is similar in its cotnstruction to the 1101- low or tubular sections 2 of the other two supporting-legs, and each of these sections are cut at an incline at their upper ends and provided with a lip or flange 3, adapted to be received in the turned-over flange 4 of an attaching-plate 5, which is riveted or otherwise firmly secured to the seat 6. In practice 1 preferably interpose cushioning material '7, which may be of felt or other suitable material, between the seat 6 and the attachingplates 5. The central upper member 1 of the legs is pivotally fastened by a bolt 8 to one of the other upper members, while the other member 2 is pivotally fastened to the member 1 by the bolt 9. As the result of this con- 5 struction the telescoping section which engages in the member 1 must be permitted to pass both the bolts 8 and 9, while the telescoping sections which engage in the members 2 2 have by necessity to pass but the bolt [co edge. To this end the telescoping sections 10, which are inserted in the hollow 0r tubular members 2 2, are provided with slots 11 to pass the bolts 8 and 9, the slot in one of the sectionsreceiving the bolt 8 and the slot in the other section receiving the bolt 9. These telescoping sections are preferably made of wood, and the slot extends from a point near the upper end to a point near the lower end, thus leaving the solid ends on the sections, and the upper ends of the sections have attached thereto the inverted- U-shaped spring 12, having its ends 14 bent outwardly, whereby to engage with the lower ends of the hollow or tubular sections when the telescopingsections are withdrawn, and thus hold the latter in the extended position. The telescoping sections. are provided adjacent their upper ends with transverse slots 15, which allow of the compressing of the free ends of the spring 12 in order to disengage from the ends of the tubular sections or members and permit the telescoping sections sliding into the tubular section. The telescoping section 16, which engages in the tubular section or member 1, is provided with slots 17 18the one to receive the bolt 8 and the other to receive the bolt 9. The spring 12, which holds the section 16 in the extended position, will of necessity be placed across the upper end of the section 16 diagonally, whereby as not to interfere with the slots. The lower ends of the telescoping sections 10 10 and 16 are cut at an incline, whereby they will more firmly rest upon their support.
It is to be noted that the telescoping sections are easily and quickly withdrawn from the tubular section of the supporting-legs and that the seat may be readily and quickly attached to the upper ends of the tubular sec tion 1 to place the stool in position for use.
When it is desired to fold the stool, the seat may be disconnected from the ends of the tubular sections, the telescopic sections slid within the tubular sections, and the legs then folded into alinement with each other, the
seat placed alongside thereof, as seen in Fig.
' 1 of the drawings, and a comparatively small and neat bundle therebv obtained.
While I have shown and described my invention in detail as practiced by me, it will of course be observed that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a folding camp-stool, the combination with the tubular upper leg-sections provided at their upper ends with outwardly-extending lips, attaching-plates secured to the said lips, and a seat secured to the said attachingplates, of telescoping sections operating in the said upper leg-sections, the said telescopic sections being slotted, pivot-bolts. passing through the said upper sections securing them together in a manner to permit their being folded in alinement, the said bolts engaging the said slots, thus forming guides for the same, and means for holding the telescopic sections in an extended position, substantially as described. v
2. In a folding camp-stool, the combination with the tubular upper leg-sections, provided at their upper ends with outwardly-extending lips, attaching-plates secured to the said lips, and a seat secured to the said attachingplates, of telescoping sections operating in the said upper leg-sections, the said telescopic sections being slotted, pivot-bolts passing through the said upper sections securing them together in a manner to permit their being folded in alinement, the said bolts engaging the said slots, thus forming guides for the same, and springs carried by the telescoping sections for engagement with the lower end of the tubular sections, to hold the said tele- V scoping sections in an extended position substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
