UNITE LOUIS KOSSUTH JOHNSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO ALDEN I TYPE MACHINE COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOR SORTING TYPES, doc.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 747,183, dated December 15, 1903.
Application filed April 4, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS KOSSUTH J OHN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invent-ed certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanism for Sorting Types, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My improvements are designed more particularly for use in connection with a compositors type-case for the reception and sorting of discarded types, spaces, &c.
The invention consists in the special construction andarrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device Fig. 2, a plan thereof; Fig. 3, a vertical section upon plane of line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a vertical section of the space-plate and compartments.
Mounted between bearings a a, is a spindle S, which is preferably inclined at any suitable angle. As shown in the drawings, this spindle is formed with three sections 3 s s of difierent diameters, although it is obvious that any number of sections of various diameters may be employed. To one end of this spindle S a pulley sis attached,by means of which power may be applied in any wellknown manner.
A spaoe-platel is preferably made adj ustable with relation to the spindle S for the purpose of regulating the distance between it and the sections 8 s s of said spindle S. In the drawings I have shown an abutment p projecting from the lower end of the spaceplate P and formed with the slot 1), through which projects a stud 10 formed with a screwthreadwhich engages with a thumb-nut 79 by which means the space-plate may be moved either to or from the spindle S.
Partitions c c c 0 project from the front side of the space-plate, thereby forming compartments O O O for the reception of the different sizes of type, &c.
The operation is as follows: Types, spaces, &c., may be fed into the hopper H, which may be supported uponthe space-plate P or other- Serial No. 151,021. (No model.)
wise, if desired, down the inclined surface h, on which they slide until they come in contact with the spindle S. The spindle S being set at an angle and rotated inadirection opposite the front side of the face-plate P, as indicated in the drawings by arrows, causes the types to gradually slide down to the sections .9 s s and fall through the spaces if t 15 formed by said sections and space-plate, into the compartments 0 O 0 The conical portions of the spindle S between the cylindrioal sections 8 s s are for the purpose of slightly agitating the types as they pass along the spindle, so that they will drop loosely onto the sections 5 and 8 thus avoiding the clogging of the device.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In adevice for sorting type, spaces, &c.,
the combination of an inclined spindle having several diameters and an opposed plate whereby spaces are created of diiferent widths for the purpose and substantially in the manner described.
2. In a device for sorting type, spaces, 850., the combination of an inclined spindle having several diameters, and an opposed plate whereby spaces are created of different widths, and means for adjusting said space-plate with relation to said spindle, for the purpose and substantially in the manner described.
3. In a device for sorting type, spaces, &c., the combination of the inclined spindle S, formed with sections 3, s of dilferent difameter, the hopper H, the space-plate P, and the compartments 0, O 0 arranged and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
4. In a device for sorting type, spaces, &c., the combination of a rotatable spindle formed with sections of different diameters having conical sections interposed'between them and a space-plate arranged and operating substantially in the manner set forth.
LOUIS KOSSUTH JOHNSON.
