Description

UNITED STATES Patented December 15, 1903.
PATENT EEIcE.
DRINKING-RECEPTACLE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 747,123, dated December 903- Application filed February 20,1903. Serial No. 144,185. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that We, ROBERT E. BOURKE and HENRY WITTEKIND,citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented a certain'new and useful'Improvement in Drinking-Receptacles; and we declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Ourinvention relates generallyto drinkingreceptacles, and more particularly to a trick device from which the liquid can only be drawn by one familiar with the construction of the receptacle.
The primary object of our invention is to provide a drinking-receptacle of apparently ordinary construction which when placed to the lips of the uninitiated permits the liquid to flow through openings below the rim thereof and will only deliver the contents therefrom to the mouth of auser familiar With its construction.
A further object of our invention is to provide a drinking-receptacle simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, and capable of afiording amusement in use.
Our invention, generally described, consists in a drinking-receptacle having one or' more perforations through the wall thereof at points below its rim and provided with a passage leading from the interior thereof near the bottom and communicating with the exterior of the receptacle at a point in its rim and having a port connecting said passage with the atmosphere at some point intermediate of the bottom and rim of the receptacle.
Our invention will be more fully described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which the same is illustrated as embodied in a convenient and practical form, and in which- Figurel is an elevational view; Fig. 2 sectional View on line 2 2, Fig. 1; and Fig. asectional view on line 3 3, Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters are used to indicate similar parts in the several figures of the drawings.
A designates a drinking-receptacle of any ends of the passage.
desired size and shape-such, forinstance, as a beer-stein.
Bdesignates the handle for facilitating the use of the stein, which extends from a point near the bottom thereof to the rim 0, to which the impression that the perforations d are merely superficial ornamentations.
A passage 19 leads from a point 6 near the bottom of the receptacle. tothe rim thereof. This groove may conveniently be formed in the handle B, as indicated in the drawings. The passage 2) is continued in the rim 0 of the receptacle to a point b Where it terminates at the exterior surface of the rim. The portion of the passage 19 in the rim 0 preferably extends toward the righta comparatively short distance from the juncture of the top of the handle with the rim of the receptacle. A port 11 leads from the passage b to the atmosphere at some point intermediate of the The atmospheric port 19 may be conveniently located on the under side of the upper end of the handle adjacent to the rim of the receptacle.
The use and operation of our invention are as follows: When the receptacle is raised to the mouth of the user and his lips placed upon the rim 0, an inclination of the receptacle such as would in an ordinarily-constructeddevice cause the liquid contained therein to flow into the mouth of the user results in the liquid passing through holes 61 in the receptacle below the rim, thereby preventing the liquid from fiow ing to the mouth of the user. The liquid flowing through the perforations d will fall upon the clothing of the uninitiated user, much to his discomfiture and the amusement of those familiar with the construction of the trick receptacle. Any one possessing a knowledge of the construction of the receptacle may readily drink therefrom by lifting the same in the left hand and placing the lips over the opening b in which the passageb terminates, and at the same time placing a finger or thumb over the atmospheric port 12 The liquid may then be drawn from the bottom of the receptacle through the passageb into the mouth of the user without necessitating any inclination of the receptacle such as would permit the liquid to flow through the perforations d.
The arrangement of the perforations d and the location of the atmospheric port b and the termination b of the passage may be such that the fact that the receptacle is anything more than of ordinary construction can only be discerned by a careful inspection thereof. One familiar with the construction of the receptacle can, therefore, readily drink therefrom without disclosing the fact thatit is of special construction, and even after an uninitiated person has attempted to drink therefrom he may be considerably mystified by the facility with which one familiar with the receptacle may imbibe of the liquid contained therein.
It is obvious that the passage leading from the bottom of the receptacle to the rim thereof may be utilized in the same manner that a straw is used in an ordinarily-constructed 1 receptacle, and consequently our invention is useful in addition to its utility as a trick device. For such legitimate use the port to the atmosphere I) may be omitted.
From the foregoing description it will. be
observed that we have invented a drinkingone possessing a knowledge of its secret construction.
While we have described more or less precisely the details of construction, we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves thereto, as we contemplate changes in form, the proportion of parts, and the substitution of equivalents as circumstances may suggest or render expedient without departing from the spirit of our invention.
Having now fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a drinking-receptacle, of a circular outwardly-projecting rim surrounding the top thereof, an outwardly projecting rib formed on and surrounding the exterior surface of the receptacle and located a comparatively short distance below said rim,'said receptacle having an ornamental annular groove located between said rim and said rib, and having located within said groove a series of perforations extending through the wall of the receptacle, a handle for lifting the receptacle provided with a passage leading from the interior of the receptacle near the bottom thereof through the handle and terminating at an exterior point in the rim of the receptacle adjacent to the top of the handle, said passage having a port leading downwardly from a point on the under side of the handle near the top thereof and communicating with the atmosphere.
In testimony whereof we sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
