IMPROVEMENT 1M' Low-WATER DsTBoToRs ron sTEaM-esNr-.Birons 'dtp simula maar tu' tu tigen ilcitas ateat" mn mating part at tip. same.
To ALLwHoM IT MAY coNcMRN;
Be it'known that I, G. B JMASSEY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have inventedra new and improved Low-Watcr-'fDetector for Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that vthe following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use t-he same,'rcference being had to the accompanying drawings, formingpart of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful device for ascertainingthe height of water insteam-bolers, a'nd for'ascertaining the'quantity of wa-ter or liquid contained 'inail vessels where-steam is generated; and it con! l s ists in so arranging a. lever or sway-bar on afulcrnm orgcentr'e attached to a standard, (which lever or sway-bar 'has a weight lattached at one end, andis connected with a water-vessel at the otbe11,) that the ends of the lever or sway-bar shall be raised cr-lowered, according as the wat`er-line in the' boiler rises or falls, and so that when the water in the boiler falls below 4a certain point, the alnrm'shall be given, as will be hereinafter more fully .Y
described.
' rllhe drawing represents a sectional elevation of esteem-boiler with my detector attached, being partly n section, forthevpurposc'of showing moreplainly the construction and operation.v A is Vthe boiler, and rep'resentsthe water-line. l C is the boiler-flue. D is the stand attached to the-boiler. E is the lever or sway-bar. F isa weight-attached to 'one' end ofi'the bar E. Gr is a,globe or vessel which is connected with the boiler by a pipe which`is markedv H. I. is 'a steam-whistle. l, Jis a. bent rod or iron sti-.np
.which isccnn'ccted with the sway-bar at'z'. i The pipe passes through a hole in theother end, as seen at lc.
vThe end of the pipe lH enters 'the vessel G, as seen at Z. The pipe (with the vessel) is supported on the stud m,
when the .weight of the vessel preponderates and raises the weight F. When'there is a suihciency of water in the boiler, the pressure will f orce water therefrom through `the pipe H, and fill, or nearlyll, the vessel Gas represented in the drawinff. When the waterin the'boile'rfalls'below thepipe. H, the water in the vessel. G will ilovvrinto the boiler` of its. own gravity, and steamwill takemits place'thusgiving the preponderance to the weight F, which raises thc vessel vand the end of the pipe H with i'vhichth'e sway-bar is connected. When this movement of thcsway-bar takes place the steam-whistle i sblowul. The valve of the whistleis marked 71., and
it has its seat onV the inside of the globe or vcssel G, as seeninnthe drawing. The valvelrod 0 is attached tothe sway-bar atp, so.that when the movement takes place a lever-purchase-will, be obtained sufficient to forcethe valve from its seat and allow steam to escap'e to give the alarm; 'lhe'fnlerum or centre R, from which the sway-bar' is supported, is made variable by beingv attached to the swinging bars S, so that the sway-,bnr may .adjust itself to thepositiop of the vessel G,an l keep it Yin anfuprigl'rt position. The angular joint in the pipe II may bea gas-pipe joint,'as seen vin 'the drawing; or a piece of elastic tubing may be attached, or the pipe, in one continuons piece, `.may be made to spring, so as to alle w the vesselG to rise suihciently, if it is desiredlto so construct it.
It will thus be seen that the water-line in the boiler will vdetermine"whether the vesselG- shpllpcontain. water or steam. If the water in G has been expelled in suil'icient quantity to cause the weightF to prepondera-te and raise tlre vessel G, the steam itself will give the alarm. p
Having described my invention, I claim'as new,a11d desire -to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The movable vessel G, connected with a steam-boiler or other vessel vin which steam is generated, and with the oscillating-lever or sway-bnr E, substantially as and'for the purposes shown and described. i
2. The lever or sway-bar E, supported from avariab'le fulcrum or centre, and'connected with and operating upon the vessel G, substantially, as set'forth, for the purposes specified.V
The above specification of my invention signed byA me, lthis `thirtieth day of January, 1868.
l G. B. MASSEY.
