SPECIFICATION forming part of Iietters Patent No. 747,040, dated December 15, 1903.
Application filed item 1, 1903.
To an whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER O. BRAD- LEY, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Thill-Oouplings, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in thill-coupliugs having special reference to the draft-eye, coupling-pin, and a packing interposed between the draft-eye and coupling-pin, the object being to permit the use of a draft-eye and coupling-pin having spherical bearingsurfaces, between which is interposed a hollow spherical packing,-which is held in place against lateral movement with reference to the draft-eye by suitable flanges provided on the jaws of the draft-eye.
In the drawings, Figure 1. is a side elevation of the thill-coupling embodying the fea tures of my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views showing, respectively, the movable jaw and fixed jaw of the draft-eye. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the detached coupling-pin, the packing being removed. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5 5, Fig. 1, except that the coupling-pin is shown in elevation. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the detached hollow spherical packing.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings I have shown a thill-coupling consisting of a fixed jaw 1 and a movable jaw 2, which is hinged at 3 to the front end of the fixed jaw 1. A link 4 is detachably engaged with the free end of the jaw 2 and is thrown into and out of operative position by a lever 5, which is fulcrumed at 6 to one end of a spring-arm 7, the latter being secured to an axle 8 through the medium of the clip-bolt 9 and clamping-nuts 10. A coupling-pin 11. is inserted between the jaws 1 and 2 and is provided with a spherical knuckle or bearing 12, upon which is placed a hollow spherical packing 13. This packing is split longitudinally through one of its sides and is provided with inner and outer spherical bearing-faces 14: and 15 and truncated open ends 16. The adjacent inner faces of Serial No, 167,867 (No model.)-
' the jaws 1- and 2 are also spherical, and the opposite ends of said jaws are formed with inwardly-projecting flanges 18, which form abutments for the truncated ends of the packing 13, so that when the packing is placed upon the spherical knuckle 12 and engaged by the spherical bearing-faces of the jaws 1 and 2 the flanges 18 engage the truncated ends or edges of the packing and hold the same from lateral displacement with reference to the jaws at the same time the adjacent edges of the flanges 18 are separated a sufficient distance from the reduced ends of the couplingpinto permit said coupling-pin and draft-eye to rock one upon the other transversely or circumferentially without the liability of bringing the metal parts into contact with each other, thus forming a noiseless coupling in which the interposed packing holds the metal parts of the draft-eye and coupling-pin from contact with each other.
In assembling the parts of this invention, assuming that the jaws 1 and 2 are open, the packing-ring is first sprung open and placed upon the spherical knuckle 12 with the packing thereon, after which the coupling-pin,
with the packing thereon, is inserted between the jaws 1 and 2, and the movable jaw is then rocked forwardly and clamped in its operative position upon the packing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat'- ent, is
In a thill-coupling, the combination of two jaws having spherical bearing-faces and inwardly-projecting flanges at the opposite ends of the bearing-faces, a coupling-pin having a spherical knuckle inserted between the jaws and a hollow spherical packing fitted upon the spherical knuckle and engaged with the bearing-faces 0f the jaws, said packing having its opposite ends truncated and abutting against said flanges.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of July, 1903.
CHRISTOPHER O. BRADLEY.
