BALANCED SLIDE-VALVE.
SEEGIFICAELTION forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,023, dated December 15, 1903.
Application filed May 27, 1903. Serial Ila-158,943. (N model.)
T0 at whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE LEsLIE WAoK- EROW, a resident of Mellette, in the county of Spink and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Balanced Slide-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to slide valves in general, and has for its chief object novel and improved exhausting means specially intended for balanced slide-valves, but-adapted to any similar type of valve.
The invention consists of novel constructions and arrangement of parts, which I will now proceed to describe in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View on line (B a: of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a top plan view with the steam-chest removed,
showing my peculiar feed and exhaust ports.
In carrying out my invention I employ a cylinderAofanyapprovedconformation, having a substantially flat top or upper side '13, provided with a guideway O, which forms the seat for my improved valve D. Near each end of the cylinder A and in the-guideway O,
I form two ports E E, of which E is a feedport' leading direct into the cylinder and E an exhaust-port with an outlet F, as shown. Over the valve D, I arrange a suitable casing or chest G, having open ends adapted to be closed by plates H, which may or may not be in one piece with the end plates I of the cylinder A. The casing G and the end plates H I may be secured by tap-bolts J, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or by other suitable and ap- 40 proved means. It will be noticed that my valve D is substantially U shape and that it is hollow from end to end. The hollow passage through the valve ends with enlargving openings K, adapted at all time to cover both exhaust-posts E and one feed-port E. In other words, the valve is intended to be long enough adapted at either adjustment to have its enlarged end openings cover an eX- haust and feed port at one end of thecylinder and the exhaust-port at the other end of the cylinder. Itis understood that the valve must have some means, substantially as the rod L, connecting it with shifting mechanism and also that a piston M and piston-rod N are employed. By reference to Fig. 2 of my drawings it will be noticed that steam in the chest G has free circulation around the body portion of the valve, and thereby effecting perfect balance. The guideway O prevents lateral movement of the valve and insures proper covering of the ports.
While more or less novelty resides in minor details of myinvention, its chief feature, and to which I call special attention, is the peculiar exhausting means afforded, which is substantially continuous through both outlets F. I have hereinbefore referred to the enlarged open ends to the passage-way through my valve. The object of making the end openings enlarged is to provide free and unobstructed exit from the port E into and through the port E. The exhaust is further improved and increased by providing conjoint passage thereof through the hollow valve and the exhaust-port E at the other end of the cylinder. In brief, when the piston is moving forward the engine will be exhausting through the port E, enlarged open end of the hollow valve, port E, and the outlet F of the latter port at this end of the cylinder A. During the same time part of the exhaust-steam will pass through the hollow valve to the port E at the rearend of the cylinder and exit through its outlet F. Obviously at this time the valve is at its forward position, leaving the port E at the rear of the cylinder uncovered and adapted to feed live steam from the chest G direct into the cylinder with force, in rear of the piston. Backward movement of the valve leaves the port E at the forward end of the cylinder uncovered, providing open communication between the steam-chest and the cylinder at the forward end of the latter. In this position of the valve the forward port E 5 will feed steam while all the other ports are exhausting, as herein before fully described. Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with an engine-cylinder, a steam-chest having two sets of ports at opposite ends thereof, one port in each set being adapted to feed direct into the enginecylinder and with the other port of each set adapted to provide direct exhaust, a U shaped slide-valve in the steam-chest, with its whole upper side below the inner top side of the said chest, and its under side elevated adapted to form a surrounding steam-space, the said slide-valve having a passage-way therethrough from end to end terminating with downwardly-enlarging end openings, the said enlarging openings being adapted, with the valve on its seat, to cover one direct port into the engine-cylinder and both direct exhaustports substantially as described.
2. In combination with an engine-cylinder, a steam -chest, a reduced guideway in the steam-chest, extending from end to end thereof, a U-shaped valve seated in the said guide- Way and with its whole upper side below the inner top side of the said chest, and its under side elevated adapted to form a surrounding steam-space, the U-shaped valve having a passage-way from end to end terminating with downwardly-enlarging end openings, the said steam-chest having two sets of ports with one port in each set adapted to feed direct into the engine-cylinder, and the other port of each set providing direct exhaust, the enlarging end openings of the said passageway, through the valve, being adapted to provide open communication through one direct port into the engine-cylinder and both direct exhaust-ports substantially as described.
