, Be it known that I, FRANCES O. MCDONALD, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact'description.

My present invention pertains to garmentsupporters, and is in the nature of an improvement upon the device forming the subject-matter of my Patent No. 739,698, dated September 22, 1903. I

It is the purpose of the present invention p I at 12 12, and are then bent to form the upto devise a garment-supporter particularly designed for use in retaining and securing hosiery and the like which will embody the features of durability, simplicity, and convenience.

, Another object of my invention is to so cor.- relate and combine a locking member with the frame or main body portion of the supporter that a button, stud, or similar article may be securely and firmly locked by the supporter, the button being adapted to engage with a stocking or other article of clothing. 7

To the accomplishment of the above-recited ends the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as is described in this specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the appended claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective. view of a gar-' ment supporter embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a face or front view of a portion of the supporter carrying the locking-tongue, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken through my improved garmentsupporter.

In the accompanying drawings, 5 designates a strap having formed a short distance above the endv thereof a loop, as at 6, to which loop is designed to be secured my improved garment-supporter or retaining member.

I clearly shown in Fig. 2, comprises, essentially, a transverse tubular bar 7, designed to retain the horizontally-extending end por tions' 8 8 of the main body portion or frame of the supporter, said frame being formed from a single piece of wire or other suitable material, bent, approximately, centrally, as

at 9, to form a relatively elongated tongue or loop portion, the sides 10 10 of which are formed with shoulders 11 11 about midway the length of said sides, said shoulders serving a purpose to be hereinafter set forth. At aboutone-half the length of the entire body ortion the sides 10 10 diverge outwardly, as

wardly-extending arm portions 13 13, which members or arms 13 converge slightly inward to the curved or shouldered portions 14 14:, when they again turn outward at approximately right angles to the arms 13 13, forming theloop portions 15 15, which terminate in the free ends 8 8, said ends, as above described, being inserted in and held by the tubular sleeve or bar 7. It will thus be seen that each of the sidesof themain body portions of the fastener is formed with a com-1 pound curved bend.- Secured to the curved or bent portions 12 12 at the termination of the sides 10 10 of the tongue 9 is a hinge member 16, the sides 17 17 of such member being bent or extended outwardly relative to each other to permit the engagement of the ends of said arms with the body portion of the loop. The sides 17 17 of the hinge member are curved or bent upwardly at their end portions 18 18 and terminate in the cross-bar 19, which bar is slightly curved or bent inwardly to enable it to securely engage with the shank of a button or the like.

From the above description of the locking member it will be seen that it is approximately U-shaped in form, with the cross-bar set at an angle to the parallel arms of the member. When in use, the tongue portion 9 of the fastening member is designed to engage with a button 20, said button being passed through the tongue or loop, so that the stud 21 of such button will lie against the extremity of the tongue. The hinge or looking member 16 is then swung downwardly, so that the cross-bar 19 rests against the stud 21 on the opposite side from that bearing against the end of the loop, and the peculiar formation of thelocking member permits the sides 17 17 thereof to lie back of the vertical plane of the sides of the tongue, the point of juncture of the cross-bar with the side portions of the locking member resting against the shoulders 11 11, formed on the tongue, the construction being such that the garment or the like will be securely held or clasped. When it is desired to release the button, it is only necessary to press upon the sides of the body portion of the fastener, which will permit the locking member to be readily disengaged from contact with the spring sides of the device,and the button may then be easily slipped out from engagement with the tongue.

While the drawings illustrate a fastener especially designed as a hose-supporter, it will of course be understood that it may be readily applied and adapted for other and various uses.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A fastening device, comprising a main body portion formed with an elongated tongue, said tongue having shoulders formed in its sides, and a locking member hinged to the main body portion, said locking member being approximately U-shaped, and'having a cross-bar which is designed to rest on the shoulders of the sides of the tongue, substantially as set forth.

2. A fastening device, comprising a body portion formed of a single piece of material, the ends of the material being connected by a tubularsleeve, an elongated tongue formed of a loop at one extremity of the body portion, the sides of said tongue having shoulders formed therein, and a locking member hinged to the body portion at the open end of the tongue, said locking member having a curved cross-bar formed at its free-end, which bar is designed to bear against the shoulders formed in the sides of the loop'when the device is in its operative position, substantially as set forth.

A fastening device, comprising a body portion formed of a single piece of wire, the ends of said body portion being connected by a tubular sleeve, a relatively long tongue portion formed on said body portion, the wire from which the body portion is formed having a compound bend or curve above the tongue portion, and alocking member hinged to the body portion of the fastener at the open end of the tongue, said locking member having across-bar formed integral therewith, said bar being bent inward and set at an angle to the sides of the member, the construction being such that when it is in its locking operative position the cross-bar will engage with a button or stud and cooperate with the end of the tongue to secure a garment or the like upon said stud, substantially as set forth.

4. A fastening device, comprising a body portion formed with a tongue member, and a locking member hinged to the body portion adjacent to the tongue, the lower portions of the sides of the locking member being bent outward at an angle to the main portion of the sides, and a cross-bar formed at the extremities of the angular lower portions, said bar being designed to cooperate with the end of the tongue to secure a garment or the like upon a stud or button.
