COMBINED STOCKlNG-SUPPORTER AND BUTTON-HOLE CATCH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,745, dated July 8, 1884.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, SoLoN E. MOORE and WILLY H. MANsFrnLn, citizens of the United States, residing at Swanton, in the county of Franklin and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Cornbined Stocking -Supporter and Button Hole Eye; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.

This invention has relation to stocking-supporters; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the bent-wire loop, the branches of which are connected at one end by a transverse bend of the wire, the sides of which project laterally from the central portion, forming a button-hole catch, and at the same time assisting the elastic force of the pinching branches of the supporter, all as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter a designates a piece of webbing, usually of elastic character, to which the wire devices are attached. b b indicate the combined buttonhole catches and stocking-supporters. Each of these devices consists of a piece of springwire,which is bent at one end, a, in loop form, having a straight portion or bearing, 6?, where the ends of the wire come together, and are connectedby solder or otherwise in a substan- Tib tial manner, to prevent spreading when the spring-branches e e are engaged by a fold of cloth or upper end of the stocking. The

springbranches e 6 come together or nearly together along their straight portions g g, and 5 have their lower portions, h h, bent outward and connected by the reverse transverse bend lawhich is bent toward thelower portions, h h, in convex form, as at m, to provide a stop which will not engage the fabric pinched between the branches at g g in such a positive manner as to tear it. The elastic action of the transverse bend is assists materially in preserving the elasticity of the side branches, 0 6. At the same time the lateral projections formed by the transverse bend and the lower outward bends, h h, of the branches 6 e serve to provide a button-hole catch which will ride easily in a button-hole without tearing it. In this manner the necessity of a button,which is always an obj eotionable device, being liable to be lost in the wash, is avoided.

Having described this invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. A combined garment and button hole catch consisting of a piece of spring-wire having the free ends bent to form a loop atone end, and the spring-arms brought together near the opposite end to form a spring clamping device,and then bent laterally in opposite directions to form a button-hole catch and assist the engaging branches in pinching the fabric, substantially as specified.

2. As an improved article of manufacture, a stocking-supporter consisting of the webbing a, having secured at opposite ends, by their loops 0 c, the catch devices b b, the spring-arms of which are bent inwardly to form an engaging straight portion, 9 g, to pinch the stocking, and provided with lateral loops 7c is to engage abutton-hole, substantially as specified.
