GAGE-BOARD ATTACHMENTjFOn sAwiNG-MAoi- HNES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,972, dated December '15, 190'3.
Appleman met Apen v, 190s. 'semi ire-151,515. in@ meters To @ZZ whom, rlmcty oon/cern: .Be it known that I, JOHN THOMAS MARSH,v a citizen of the United States,'res iding at Farmer City, in the county of Dewitt and State of Illinois, have made certainnew and Y useful Improvements in Gage-Board Attachments for sawing-Machines, of whichthe following is a specification. I
Mypresent invention relates to an improved attachment for the tables or, tops of sawingmachines for the purpose of Supporting lumber at diierent angles to the saw.
A portion'f my present invention is shown'v and described in my allowed application, Serial No.'129,280. 1 z
The invention is embodied inv the :means hereinafter described, and illustrated in the' accompanying drawings, whereby Va gageboard is adapted to be adjusted and-'support- 'ed vat the various angles required.
In said drawings,'F igure'1 is a perspective view illustrating my invention in connection with a lumber-carrier, to which reference will behereinafter made. 2 5
Figs. 2, 3, 32, and 4 are detail views ot' certain joints and counections, to which referencewill be hereinafter made. Figs. 5 and 6 are respectively an end .and plan View illustrating the adj ustment of the gage-board.
Referring -iu the rst instance to Figi, A indicates the frame of my sawing-machine,
' and 'B a circular saw projecting through. a
slot in the table or top C, which is adapted to slide on the said frame A. In my aforesaid application-this adaptation forendwise reci procation of the table C is f ully describedand illustrated, together with improved rollerbearings for supporting the same and relieving friction.
E indicates'a support or carrier for luixlber, which may be employedv in connection with the table-top and Iwhich is fully'described and illustrated -in my aforesaidV afllowed application.
D indicates the gage-board proper, in connection with which the lumber-carrier E may he employed at will-that is to say, ihe`1urn her-carrier is advantageously' employed in connection with the gage-board; but it is to be understood that the latter is adapted 'for use independent-ly thereof. The means for Supporting and adjusting the gage-board at parts connected by a vrule-joint. at 9a.
dilere'it angles are as'follows: Two rods or bars 1 are journaled in suitable-holders or keepers 2, secured to the back of the gageboard at points midway between the centers and ends thereof. Clamps 3 are applied Ito the central portions of 'these rods l, the same bein g formed'of. two plates arranged opposite passing through themeentrally. Rods 4 are arranged and held in the outer portions' of 'each other and provided with a'clamp-serew saidclamps 3, as shown in Figs.- -l and 4. It
@is apparent that by tightening or loosening the clamp'the rods 1 may be adj usted as conditions require. The lower ends of the rods 4 are'connected by right-angular rods 5 with horizontal rods 6, which slide in the eyes of- 'clarnp-bolts 7, the iatterpassingthrough the table, as shown in Fig. l. By adjusting the nuts On the lower ends of the eyebolts 7 the rods 6 may be clampedv in anyadjustment to I which they are adapted, so that they may be slidlengthwise orturned bodily to the right or left. tached to the aforesaid 'rods 6 by means of a clamp 10, which is illgstrated in Fig. 3. The same consists of an eyebolt havinga nut 10a, 'between which and the rod 6 a washer -10b is interposed. By adjustment of the nut l0a it is apparent that the clamp may be' tightened or loosened,-as conditions require, to provide The bent ends of the rods 5 are atfor adjustments ot' the rods 5 on the rods (i. Itis further apparent that this.adjustment` Will 'be made when it is required to set the gage-board D, forward or back on the table C relative to the saw B and' also when the gage-board is to be set atadiierent horizontal inclination -to thetable, as illustrated in Fig'. 6, where a piece of llumber X' is being sawed at an angle to its longer axis.' The upper ends of the vertical rods 4 are adj usty ably connected with thebent rods 5 by means of diagonal rods 9, which are made n(two See Fig. 1 The lower or rear ends of said diago/nal rods are adjustably connected with the gods 5 by clamps 8, which are fully illustrated in Fig. v2. The clamp is formed of a' U-shaped screw-bolt'having nuts 8 applied to its ends and awasher or plate l1 intervenlIco ing the said nuts and the rod 5. `It is apparent that by adjustment of the nuts b the clamps may be slid along the rods 5; as re# I moval of the lower edge of the lumber, thus forming a bevel'. The clamps 8 permit 'a certain adjustment of the gage-board in this llo ' great rapidity.
manner; but to provide for afurth'er or more extreme adjustmen t-that is to say, for placing the gage-board at a still greater inclination--the diagonal rods 9 may be bent upward at a greater o'r less angle by reason of the provision of the rule-joint 9?, as illustrated in Fig. 3*. It will be understood that when the jointed rods9 are thus placed at an angle they will be held in such position by duly tightening the clamps 8 on the rods 5. In place of employing these means forholding the rods 9 at the required angle it is' obvious that a suitable screw-clamp may be applied to the ru'le-joint 9a.
Thus -by means of the attachments pro- .vided between the gage-board D and the table C the former has a wide range of adjustment at different vertical and horizontal angles, and such adjustments may be made with Further, the said means hold the gage-board rigidly'and constitute a very simple and cheap attachment.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with the slidable table and a gage-board resting thereon, of bent horizontal rods and diagonal rods having pivotal connection with the board adjacent to its top and bottom edges, clamps for securing the outer ends of the diagonal rods to the other rods, a third set of lrods arranged. parallel to the table and to which the aforesaid bent rods are secured and clamps applied to the table and in which the said third set of rods are'slidable, substantially as shown and described. i
A2. The combination Vwith the slidable table and a gage-board resting thereon of-horizontal rods and diagonal rods having pivotalconnection with the gage-board adjacent toits top and bottom edges, clamps for securing the outer ends of the diagonal rods to the other rods, and a third set of rods to which the aforesaid horizontalrods are secured, and clamps secured to the table and in which the said third set of rods are slidable, substantially as shown and described.
3.`The combination, with the frame, the
saw, and the table adapted to slide on said frame, of the gage-board resting upon the said table, vertical rods journaled on the back of said gage-board, andhorizontal and diagonal rods pivotally connected atl their inner ends with such vertical rods, and means for clamping the outer en'ds of said rods, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with the slidable table, and a gage-board adapted to be shifted to various horizontal angles, of the means for supporting the gageboard and permitting such adjustment, the same comprising rods which are journaled on the back of the board, parallel rods clamped on suchv journaled rods and adapted to swing horizontally, horizontal rods and diagonal rods attached to the upper and lower ends ofthe swinging rods, the said horizontal rods having an adjustable connection Awith the table, substantially as shown and described. v
5. The combination with the table, a gageboard, and rods held transversely on the back ofthe latter, of jointed diagonal rods pivoted to such transverse rods, horizontal guides arranged parallel to the table, and clamps for securing the lower ends of such diagonal JoHN THOMAS MARSH.
