Be it known that I, SAMUEL MORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio,
`5 have invented certain ne'wvand useful Improvementsin Car-Couplings; and I do hercby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it io appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a carwcoupling of simple and improved construction in which the coupling may be automatic, and which may be quickly and easily manipulated to prepare for uncoupling.

The shaft 4a can be rocked by means of a rod (not shown) extending to the side of the carer by any other appropriate device accessible to the trainman.
When the cars are coupled, the parts stand approximately as seen in Fig. l. When it is desired that the cars be uncoupled, the lever 4 is turned so that the inner arm thereof strikes the toe 3b and lifts the dog, as seen in Fig. 4, after which the arm 2a is free to move outward. When the a`rm 2ab is turned out by the action of the outer end of the lever 4 on the leg 2a, thel dog is supported on the inclined surface 2b, and because this inclined surface 2b tends upwardV the dog is lifted and the angularlyprojecting toe 3* depressed, thus permitting the inner arm of the lever to be turned outward to lie Within the angular space between the dog 3 and toe 3b, as seen in Fig. 3, and therefore in position to lift the dog when it is again desired to uncouple coupled cars,

The invention'is susceptible of' modifica tion. For example, instead of resting on the inclined portion 2b in the opening position4 of the coupling the dog 3 can be held up by the lever 4.
- If the pin 2f should be lost or cut off by an ICO extraordinary load, the cars will still remain coupled because of the engagement of the heel 2d with the projection la.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a car-coupling, the combination of the knuckle having a horizontally-swinging arm with a lockinglend thereon, a verticallyrocking lever or dog adapted to engage the locking end of the knuckle-arm and having an angularly-projecting toe 3b, a horizontal rocking lever unattached to said dog, adapted to act on said toe to operate it and pass over the same 1 2.
