invention relates to the class of car couplers and is designed to provlde an 1mof this locking device is cut away at one side to form the shoulder 6; so that when "it is in raised position the tail 7 of the knuckle will clear it. This knuckle tail is preferably provided with an inclined upper face 8 which acts upon the shoulder to force up the locking device as the knuckle is swung open.
I The upper projecting end of the locking device is provided with a hole 9 through which projects a sliding cam 10 formed as a part of or secured to the sliding section 11 of the operating device. This section slides through inclined slots 12 and 18 in lugs 14 and 15 projecting upwardly from the opposite sides of the coupler body. This section of the operating device is also provided with a projection 16 onits lower side which is adapted to engage the lower wall of the slot 13 to hold the locking device in raised position, as shown in Fig. 2. The sliding section 11 is operatedby a sliding rod 17 having a loose pin and slot connection 18 therewith. The rod 17 slides through suitable guides on the car body such as shown at 19, and may be provided with a handle 20. The outer end of the sliding section may be provided with a stop 21 to prevent withdrawal of this Specification of Letters Patent. I

CHARLES mum, on cHIcAeo, I'L iivoIs, AssIeNoRro TI-IE iTArIoNAI. MAnLEArLEQ sliding section from its operative position ing slid down to its" lowest position, the cam v of the sliding operating section, res ting upon the lower wall of the upper slot in the look ing device to hold it down. In' unloc'king,
the rod is pulled forwardly, thus causing the sliding section to move within'the slots in the coupler lugs until the shoulder or proj ection has engaged" the lower wall of the slot in the higher lug'thus holding the operating device in the position shown in Fig. 2the uncoupling position. action the upper portion of the cam engages the upper wall of the slotin' the locking device to lift it until its shoulder is above the tail of the knuckle. The uncoupling position During this sliding is shown in Fig. 3; and as the knuckle swings open the. inclined upper face of its tail forces the locking device upwardly until the lower wall of the slot strikesthe lower face. of the cam. Further movement lifts the sliding memberof the operating device until its shoulder is disengaged from the lower wall of the slot, the sliding connection then resting on the locking device which in turn not affect the sliding section, as the pin is I normally at" the bottom of the slot.
In Fig. 6 I show a modified form wherein the locking device is vertical, the parts being otherwise the same as in the first form.
In Fig. 5, the dotted line a a, which is the meeting line of the face of the knuckle tail and the locking device, indicates that the knuckle tail fits against the locking face of the look at an angle to the longitudinal center line of the coupler. This results in a square pressure of the knuckle tail upon the lock, as the locking surface is substantially at right angles to the path of movement of the tail, and presents a sliding action of the locking surface when pullingstresses are ap plied.
The obvious to those skilled in the art. The
advantagesof my invention will be Wedge shaped locking device Will slide down to Whatever extent is allowed bythe coupler tail, thus taking up all Wear. As the coupler tail Wears, the Wedge shaped locking device Will slide down farther and in all cases fill the space, thus preventing looseness.
The device is simple, easily operated and not liable to get out of repair, While all the desirable functions of modern couplers are obtained. Owing to the use of an uncou pling lever or device formed in tWo sections With the loose connection, jarring is not liable to affect the operation or position of parts. The objections to a crank movement are removed and a-positive locking in the uncoupled position obtained Without injury to the operator.
Many changes maybe made in the form and arrangement of the coupler, the locking cam engaging said eye portion, the actuating;
member having a'rece ssed portionad'apted to engage the coupler-head for lock-setting the lock; substantially as described.
In'testimony whereof, Ihave hereunto set my hand.
CHARLES DIETZ.
