invention relates to the class of car couplers and is designed to provlde an 1mof this locking device is cut away at one side to form the shoulder 6; so that when "it is in raised position the tail 7 of the knuckle will clear it. This knuckle tail is preferably provided with an inclined upper face 8 which acts upon the shoulder to force up the locking device as the knuckle is swung open.
I The upper projecting end of the locking device is provided with a hole 9 through which projects a sliding cam 10 formed as a part of or secured to the sliding section 11 of the operating device. This section slides through inclined slots 12 and 18 in lugs 14 and 15 projecting upwardly from the opposite sides of the coupler body. This section of the operating device is also provided with a projection 16 onits lower side which is adapted to engage the lower wall of the slot 13 to hold the locking device in raised position, as shown in Fig. 2. The sliding section 11 is operatedby a sliding rod 17 having a loose pin and slot connection 18 therewith. The rod 17 slides through suitable guides on the car body such as shown at 19, and may be provided with a handle 20. The outer end of the sliding section may be provided with a stop 21 to prevent withdrawal of this Specification of Letters Patent. I

In Fig. 6 I show a modified form wherein the locking device is vertical, the parts being otherwise the same as in the first form.
In Fig. 5, the dotted line a a, which is the meeting line of the face of the knuckle tail and the locking device, indicates that the knuckle tail fits against the locking face of the look at an angle to the longitudinal center line of the coupler. This results in a square pressure of the knuckle tail upon the lock, as the locking surface is substantially at right angles to the path of movement of the tail, and presents a sliding action of the locking surface when pullingstresses are ap plied.

The objections to a crank movement are removed and a-positive locking in the uncoupled position obtained Without injury to the operator.
