Application filed March 31, 1903- To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J osEPH HAUPTMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Skirt- Fastener and Waist-Holder, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forminga part thereof, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to combined skirtfasteners and waist-holders, the object thereof being to provide a device of this character which is adaptable for keeping the placket tightly closed throughout its entire length and at the same time supplying an efficient means for connecting the skirt to the waist at the back, whereby it will not sag below the waist-line.

The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved fastening device, showing the several parts thereof connected together; Fig. 2, a detail vertical sectional elevation taken on the line2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a plan View of a loop forming part of the invention; Fig. 4, an inverted sectional plan View taken on the line at 4: of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a rear view of a part of a skirt with the placket open and having my device secured thereto.

In the practice of my invention the device for fastening the placket comprises two metallic strips A and B, each composed of resilient sheet metal. Each of these said strips has at its upper end an inwardly and down- Vertical-edge part an inwardly-turned beaded Serial No. 150,375. (No model.)

part or fiangeS. These eyes have their sides parallel to the edge of the resilient strip and the converging end parts nearer together at the side next to the edge of the strip. For engagement with the eyes of the strip A the strip B is provided with hooks b, which each embody a circular part 9 and an upturned end part 10, which forms a flared inlet to the hook. The strips are further provided atlheir upper ends with openings 11 and 12, through which threads may be passed for fastening them to the waistband of a skirt.

Used in conjunction with the strips A and B, I employ a horizontal loop 0, having a beaded upper edge part c and offsets c, having openings 13, to be employed as a means for receiving stitches, whereby the loop may be secured to the back part of a waist.

In the operation and use of the invention the adjacent parts D and E of the placket are provided, respectively, with a'sheath, as d and e, to receive the strips. The sheath d has an edge slit at 14 of a length equal to the vertical-edge part of the eye 6, whereby the strip A may be forced downwardly through the sheath until the eye 6 is in position opposite thereto. The eye is then pulled through until it is in proper extended position, as illustrated by Fig. 5 of the drawings, when the slit is contracted by stitching until it fits as the converging ends bear on the said stitching the eye cannot be forced back into the sheath out of operative position. The upper end of the strip is then sewed to the waistband to keep the two eyes in alinement. To secure the strip B, an edge slit is formed in the sheath 6 at 15 of sufficient length to admit of pulling the lower hook I) therethrough, and said slit is then contracted and sewed tightly around the hook and the top part is secured to the waistband by sewing stitches through the openings 11 and 12. The loop 0 is secured to the waist at the central part of the back and at the waist-line. Whenallthe parts are assembled, as shown-in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the flanged or beaded parts of the eyes 4 and 6 fit securely within the circular channels of the hooks to prevent lateral displacement of the hooks and eyes, whereby the folds of the placket are kept securely and continuously closed, and the connection of tightly against the converging parts 7. Thus the upper hooks with the beaded edge of the loop 0 prevents accidental disengagement at the Waist. The strips being composed of resilient sheet metal allow the skirt to conform to the lines of the body and keep the skirt in good shape at all times.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a placket-fastening device, the combination with a strip of resilient material comprising eyes integral therewith upon the edge thereof, having sides parallel to said edge and converging end parts extending at an acute angle to said edge, and affording facility for securely stitching said eyes in the edge of a placket; of another strip of resilient material having integral edge hooks comprising a flaring entry and circular interior arranged to engage said eyes and by such engagement hold said placket in closed position.

2. In a placket-closing device, the combination with a strip of resilient material adapt ed to be secured in a pocket in the edge of a dress-placket and comprising eyes integral therewith upon the edge thereof, said eyes having sides embodyingan inturned edge and parallel to the edge of said strip, and also having converging end parts extending at an acute angle to the edge of said strip, with the narrower side of said eye adjacent to saidstrip, of another strip of resilient material having integral side hooks, adapted and arranged to be secured in a pocket in the edge of a placket on the opposite side from said first-named strip, and with its hooks to engage said eyes and hold the said placket in hooks b, integral therewith, arranged to engage the eyes 4 and 6 of the strip A, and slot 11, and both strips arranged to be fixed in the edges of a placket and by the said engagement, to hold said placket in closed position.

4. In a placket-fastening device, the combination with the strip A, having integral eye 4, comprising converging end parts 5; eye 6 comprising converging end parts 7, each having an inwardly-turned flange 8; slot 11 and integral end hook Ct, of the strip B, having the slot 11, the integral side hooks b, and the integral end hook b, comprising the circular part 1, the bill 2, and the flaring entry 3, and said strips arranged to be fixed, one in each edge of a placket and by the engagement of said edge hooks and eyes to hold said placket in closed position, and means for engaging said end hooks a and b, on the waistband of a dress, and supporting the skirt thereof.
