UNITED STATES Patented December 15, 1903 PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL J. CUMMINGS, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
BREAST-LINK FOR DOUBLE HARNESS.
' SPECIFICATION formmg' part of Letters Patent No. 746,680, dated December 15, 1903.
Application filed April 25, 1903.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, DANIEL J. CUMMINGS, of New Haven, in the county of'New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Breast-Links for Double Harness; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the numerals of referencemarked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this. specification, and represent, in-
Figure l, a view, partlyin plan and partly in horizontal section, of a double-harness breast or kidney link constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, an end view of the same; Fig. 3, a front view thereof.
My invention relates to an improvementin breast or, as they are sometimes called, kidney links for double harnesses, the object being to produce a more convenient, efiective, and better-appearing article than anything now in use.
With these ends in view my invention consists in a breast-link having heme-hooks at its opposite ends, a rotatable sleeve mounted upon it midway of its length, and a swiveleye connected with the said sleeve.
My invention further consists in a breastlink having hams-hooks at each end, a rotatable sleeve mounted midway of its length, a swivel-eye connected with the said sleeve, and a martingale-loop also carried by the said sleeve.
My invention further consists in certain details of construction, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
As herein shown, the breast-link proper or kidney-link is made from a single rod and bent to form a middle portion or reach 2, which is straight, and two corresponding heme-hooks 3 3, the ends of which form a narrow passage 4, through which the hames are engaged with the hooks. Upon the middle portion or reach 2 of the link I mount a rotatable sleeve 5, held in place by washers 6 6, secured by rivets 7. It will be understood that the sleeve is slipped over the rod before the ends of the same are bent to form the hooks 3 3- The means for holding the Serial No. 15 L232. (No model.)
with or connected to it and providing for the attachment of the martingales which extend rearwardly to the girths of the pads or saddles. Although the sleeve 5 is free to turn upon the middle portion of the link, it is fitted so as not to rattle.
My improved construction is not only more effective, convenient, and neater than the construction heretofore employed, but also superior thereto in not rattling, as the sliding back and forth of the pole-strap ring upon the middle portion or reach of the old link made a great deal of noise and also resulted in the wear of the parts and destroyed their finish.
I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown,
but hold myself at liberty to make such departures therefrom as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A breast or kidney link having a haulehook at each end, a rotatable sleeve mounted upon it midway of its length, and a swiveleye connected with the said sleeve, substantially as described.
2. A breast or kidney link having a hamehook at each end, a rotatable sleeve mounted upon it midway of its length, a swivel-eye connected with the said sleeve, and a martingale-loop also carried by the said sleeve. I
'3. In a breast or kidney link for double harnesses, the combination with the link proper comprising a reach or middle portion and a heme-hook located at each end thereof, of a rotatable sleeve mounted upon the middle IOO specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.

portion or reach of the said link proper and provided with a hub having a rivet, a, swiveleye passed over the said rivet by means of which in is connected with the sleeve, and a 5 lnarbingale -10op depending from the said sleeve.
In testimony whereof I have signed this
