DAMPENING DEVICE FOR PAPER-CALENDERING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,655, dated December 15,1903.
' Application filed April 16,1903. Serial No. 152,900. (No model.)
dampening devices for paper-calendering machines.
The objects of the invention are, first, to provide an improved paper-dampening device for calendering-machines by which the paper is properly dampened and there is no liability of spraying or spotting the same;
second, to provide an improved paper-dampening device for calendering-machines by which the amount of moisture delivered to the paper is under the perfect control of the operator; third, to provide an improved paper-dampening device for calendering-machines which is effective for the purpose and at the same time simple in its construction and easy to operate.
Further objects and objects relating to structural details will definitely appear from the detail description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is an end elevation view of a structure embodying the features of my invention, showing the relation of the parts, the calendering-rolls being illustrated in the GOIIVBH.
portions being broken away to show the relation of the parts.
In the drawings the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little This invention relates to improvements in arrows at the ends of the section lines, and similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the lettered parts of the drawings, the frame or support A for the calcudering-rolls is of the usual or any desired construction, the rolls being arranged in the usual or any desired form. I support my improved dampening device in front of and adjacent to the first or top roll A of the stack, so that it delivers steam to the under side of the paper an as it movesacross the sameas it is delivered to the roll A from the guideroller m.
I provide a steam-receptacle B, which is preferably of about the same length as the calendering-rolls. The receptacle B isprovided with a removable top or cover 0, which is adapted to fit the same in a manner to effect a steam-tight joint. The top Cis formed with upwardly-converging sides with an opening Eat the top. I This opening is controlled by sliding covers ff, oneat each side. The cover 0 is strengthened by suitable crosspieces gto prevent springing or warping of the sides. The receptacle is provided with a screen-partition C This screen is supported by hoop-like ribs 2" to engage suitable sup ports on the walls of the casing, so that the same is firmly supported. The mesh of the screen 0 is very fine, so that it prevents any spray from the steam-delivery pipe B pass ing therethrough. Steam is delivered into the receptacle B by the pipe B, which'is provided with a suitable cock 0 to control the same. The pipe 13 is slightly inclined away from the supply-pipe b, so that the condensed steam will drip into the exhaust-pipe b, which is also provided with a cock 0. By the manipulation of these cocks c the amount of steam delivered through the perforations n of the pipe B is under the perfect control of the operator. The receptacle B is provided with an inclined bottom, so that the condensed steam is delivered through the drippipe D. The pipe B, which is passed entirely through the receptacle, also serves as a support for the same and is provided with projecting trunnions e at each end, which are passed through suitable openings in the frame A of the machine. No additional support is required.
In operation the steam is deliveredinto the pipe B and through the perforations n into the lower chamber of the receptacle B. The screen C prevents the same being forced directly against the paper m and prevents the formation of a spray, which causes the objectionable Water spots upon the paper. It also causes the even distribution of the steam over the entire under surface of the paper as it. is passed above the opening E. By the manipulation of the sliding doorsf the opening may be adjusted to any width of paper. In reversing the paper, as is frequently done in calendering the same, the paper may in one operation be passed over one side of the machine and the opposite side closed, and the paper when reversed may be passed over the other side of the machine and the covers reversed. The result is that no excess of steam is delivered into the room, and it is delivered upon the entire surface of the paper in an even manner and in such quantities as may be desired, which is, of course, a very desirable feature.
My improved paper-dampening device for calendering-machines also has the advantage of being simple in its construction and easy to operate. It may be formed of sheet metal and is easily set up or disassembled.
I have illustrated and described the same in the form preferred by me on account of its simplicity in operation and economy in construction. I am aware, however, that it is capable of very considerable variation in structural details Without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
