THADIOUS VENSON ELLIOTT, OFCOLUMBIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN B. HUTOI'IINSON, OF COLUMBIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FEED-WATER HEATER AND PURIFIERQ SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,479, dated December 8, 1903w Application filed July 3:1902. Serial No. 114,223. (No model.)
T0 00% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THADIOUS VENsoN EL- LIOTT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Columbia, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Feed- Water Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in feedwater heaters for use in connection with steamboiler furnaces; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure.1 is a perspective view, partly in section and parts being removed, of an apparatus embodying my in vention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the steam-boilerand furnace, parts being removed and others shown in section, provided with my invention. Fig 3 is a detail crosssection on about line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a detail section showing the lower connection of the water-pipes with the boiler.
Theboiler A and the furnace B may in general respects beof ordinary construction, the boiler A having the lines a and the furnace B the grate-bars b and means being provided for firing the furnace.
By my invention I provide two manifolds O 0, supported one at each side of the furnace B, with their lower ends or horizontal tubes D below the grate-bars b and their upper ends or tube's'E above the said gratebars and the upright connecting-tubes F, which extend in series between the tubes D and E, extending within the side wallsG of the furnace and exposed at their inner sides to the action of the heat of the furnace, the said upright tubes F opening into the furnace at their inner sides, as best shown in Fig.- 3. It will be understood that the tubes D and E also are exposed at their inner sides within the furnace and by arranging the tubes D below the grate-bars and the tubes E above said grate-bars an upward circulation of the water is secured within the manifolds by reason of the greater degree of heat at the up- -per ends thereof. At their rear ends the lower tubes D of the opposite manifolds are connected by a cross-tube d, which increases the water capacity of the heater and forms a direct connection between the water-tubes at the lower sides of the furnace. Water is supplied to the feed-water heater from a pump or other source of supply through a pipe H, having branches I connecting with the outer ends of the lower tubes D of the manifolds, such ends of the tubes D being inclosed by the plugs J, which may be removed for the purpose of cleaning out the manifolds whenever desired. Water is supplied from the heater to the boiler by means of the tubes K, leading fromthe upper rear ends of the manifolds to the under side of the boiler and discharging thereto at K, as shown, a suitablyvalved discharge being provided at K for blow-oif purposes. The upper front ends of the manifolds are connected by pipes L with the front end of the boiler above the waterline opening into the steam space of the boiler and cooperating with the pipes K in securing a circulation within the feed-water heater to prevent any burning out of the latter.
In operation the water supplied to the feed-water heater willbe raised to a comparatively high temperature before being dis charged into the boiler, and by reason of the upward circulation of the water in the manifolds the water will be purified within the feed-water heater before being delivered into the boiler as is desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l.' An apparatus substantially as described comprising in combination with the boiler a furnace, and the side walls of the furnace, the opposite'manifolds partly seated in the walls of the furnace and composed each of the lower tube arranged below the grate of the furnace, the upper tube above the grate of the furnace, the upright connecting-tubes between the upper and lower tubes and ex posed at their inner sides within the furnace, the cross-tube connecting the rear ends of the lower tubes and extending beneath the grate of the furnace, the feed-pipe having branches leading to the front ends of the lower tubes, water-pipes leading from the upper rear ends of the manifolds to the boiler below the water-line of the boiler, and the connecting-pipes between the upper front ends of the manifolds and the boiler above the Water-line of the latter substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the boiler, the furnaoe, the manifolds arranged at the opposite sides of the furnace and comprising the lower tubes below the furnace-grate and the upper tubes above said grate, the cross-tube connecting the rear ends of the lower tubes of the manifolds, the plugs at the front ends of said tubes, the water-supply pipes connected with the front ends of the lower tubes and connections between the upper tubes of the
