PATENT. OFFICE.
JAMES *MILNOR HICKS, OF SUMMIT, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF vTO ABBOT AUGUSTUS LOW, OF HORSESHOE, NEW YORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,332, dated December 8, 1903. Application led July 29,1903. Serial No. 167.381. (No model.)
,I construct, and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it, referring to the drawings herewith, in which- 'l Figure 1 shows a bottle and closing-cap in longitudinal section with the stopper being l zo forced to place beneath the upper surface of the cap through a. central opening thereof by means of a bottle-filling apparatus. Fig. 2 shows a similar view in whichthe stopper has been forced toits place beneath the upper sur- 2 5 face of the cap.
A is the body of the bottle. B is a circumferential'bead near the top of the4 neck of the bottle.
C is acircumferential groove formed be- 3o beneath bead B.
B is the top surface of the cap. B2 is a circumferential drop-flange to B. B3 is an ear vor indent in ange B2, which takes under the bead B in groove C to hold the cap against removal by pressure from within the bottle. There are two or more of these ears or indents in said fiange B2, (gen- E F GH J are details of a bottling-machine' pressing the stopper in taper tube H of the 6o Vc'orking-machine to a size which will permit it to pass through said openingD and beneath it, as shown in Fig. 2. The stopper thenexpands to its original size, thus filling the bottle-neck, andthe outward pressure of the l gases and liquid in the bottle forces the stopper upward against the under side of the top surface B of the cap and against the walls of the bottle-neck and seals the bottle against leakage. The greater the pressure in the bot- 7o tle the tighter will be the sealing.'
Having owfully described myinvention and the manner in which I have embodied it, what I claim as new and as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 75 In a means for sealing vessels containing liquids under pressure, the combination consisting of a vessel provided with a neck and means to receive a cap; a sealing-cap provided with means for securing it, over the mouth of said vessel-neck said cap having a. substantially flat upper surface, and a central opening in said top surface of less diameter than the inner diameter of the vesselneck; and a stopper entered beneath the top Witnesses:
