PATENT OFFICE.
HARVEY SPENCER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO SAMUEL SOYSTER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.-
BABY-COMFORTER.
bPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,920, dated December 1, 1903.
Application filed June 9,1903. Serial No. 160,724. (No model.)
T0 (6 whom it ntcty concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY SPENCER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ofthe city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, haveinvented a new and Improved Baby-Comforter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for comforting or quieting young babies, an object being to provide a device for this purpose that shall be simplein construction and that when placed in a childs mouth will not only serve to solace the child, but will afford slight nourishment.
I will describe a baby-comforter embodying myinvention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figures 1 and 2 are sectional views ofa babycomforter embodying my invention, showing the parts in different positions; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the body portion of the device.
The body portion of the comforter consists of a shank 1, on one end of which is a bulbous or ball-like head 2, and on the other end is a flattened disk-shaped head 3. This body portion is solid or imperforate and may be made of any suitable materialsuch, for instance, as hard rubber, porcelain, or the like. A soft-rubbernipple 4 is designed to be engaged over either one of the heads 2 3. When it is connected with the head 3, as indicated in Fig. 1, a somewhat larger interior area is provided than when the nipple is connected with the head 2, as shown in Fig. 2. When the parts are in the position as indicated in Fig. l, cotton is to be placed in the nipple, as indicated at 5, and this cotton may be soaked with condensed milk, sweetened water,or any desired medicament.
When the device is desired for use with a very small child or for a child having a small mouth, the parts are to be placed in position as indicated in Fig. 2, where it will be noted that the shank of the'nipple is somewhat shortened.
By making the body solid or without longitudinal bore no air can be drawn through to enter a childs stomach, which,as well known, often causes distress.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A baby-comforter, comprising a solid body portion, consisting of a shank, a bulbous head on one end and a plate or disk like head on the other end, and a compressible nipple adapted for engagement with either one of said heads.
2. Adevice for the purpose described comprising a solid body portion consisting of a shank, a bulbous head on one end, a plate or disk like head on the other end, a compressible nipple adapted for engagement with either one of said heads, and a liquid-supporting agent in said nipple.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HARVEY SPENCER.
