Description

.Zeffcre Patent No. 74,5585, dated' .Ferumy 18,V 1868; llehcitcntecl England, ovemberr, 1864.
IMPROVEMENT IN` notes Non SPINNING.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON Be it' known that we,` JHN PALEY, of Preston, cott`on-spinne1j, and THOMAS RAWSTIIORNE, of Preston, manager, both inlthe county of'lancaster, and Kingdom Ot'- Great Britain, have invented an Improved Method of Driving the CaInShaft ofV SelfActingl Spinning-Mules; and we do hereby declare that the following lis a full and 4exactdescription thereof, whichwill enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawing, and'to the letters' ofieference markedthereon.`
This'invention relates to a'. means for driving the cam-shaft of self-acting mules. The motion of the canbshaftis row'commonly obtained, from the'l driving-shaft, by means of f riotioIi-pulley's,` which frequently fail. in actionga'ndthus lead to freqnentbreakages oi' the machinery. By 'onr'invention, the'caIn-shaft is operated through a belt from an overhead or any' convenient shaft, and a fast and loose pulley on the s aid cam-slmft, or
' 'pulley can be placedon a counter-shaft, mounted in any con'- venient position, and geared int-o the cam-shaft by wheels. In this` example of our invention we have shownl a fast and `loosefp'ulleyon thefcam-shafnwhich are worked by a bandfroni an overheadshaft,`on wbic h is fixed a pulley fof the purpose'of driving. This band. may be moved from the fast to the loose pulley, and trice4 persa',
by a crank-lever, acted n po'n bythe travelling-frame of the mule at each end of' itstraverse.
f-To Venable others skilled in the art tomake and use our l1 nvention,we will proceed'to describe its vconstrnc p tion and operation.' I*
The drawing, consisting of only one ligure, isa side elevation of a portion of the frame vof a self-acting mule, showing a po'rtiohfof the cam-shaft and ofthe overhead-shaft. p i
`'The lettera designates the driving-shaft,'.from which we Vpropose Vto'obtain our motion for thecam-shaft,v which 'is Vseen below it, mounted-in bearings onthe frame. We x upon the. said shaft a'the driving-pulley c, fromwhich a band, goes to the fast and lo'ose pulleys d d, that are provided on-the sami-shaft. `The band b is removcdfrom the fast to the loose pull-ey, and vice versa, by the foikflever I, which isfconnected to the vertical arni of..an elbow-lever, z', p'ivotcd on the fraaie, asshown in the drawing. The said lever z' is conneeted byaI horizontalrod', to a pendent lever, i on whose lower end is a pin, c, which is acted upon tby the travellingframe of the Inulc at its extreme motion out. Y yOn the side of 'the travelling-frame, inside, is a-pin, y',iwhich, at the extreuie inner motion of the frame,- slides along beneath the taper block 'o1 cam, which is attached to' the horizontal a'rm of lever z', and-lifts the same, and thereby gives motion to fork/l, so-hs'to move the band b from lthe loose to the fastpulley. The'extrcnxeend of the horizontal part of-lever i is weighted, as s een'iatmL the otiice of the weight being', on the retu'rn ofthe travelling-inmate turn the lever z and draw the band b from the fast tothe loose pnllcy, thereby stopping the motion ofthe cam-shaftwhenlrequrcfl.
We do not :connue-Ourselves to thistparticular' device for removing the band Invasive can and may 'effect the same object byrother means, whichwill s gge'st themselves to'the intelligent mechanic; nor dowe con'ne our# selves'to the precise details or arrangements which we have'ahqvo'descifibed, 'as many variationsmay be madetherefrom without deviating from .theprinciple of our invention. i Y
v Ouiv invcntioneilects a great saving of wear and breakage, l'iesides'` being almostnoiseless in action,. and enabling the necessary changes' of the cam-shaft to be made at any'required speed without danger of breakage.
What we claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters-Patent, isf- The combinatiomwth the drivingband ofthe fast .aud-'loose pulleys d of the cani-shaft,4 the conneoted levers e z', and the block l and weight m Of lever z', substantially as shown.
