Be it known that I, CHARLIE E. HUBBs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Montcalm and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Stovepipe or Chimney Thimble, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved stovepipe or chimney thimble, and has for its object to provide a simple inexpensive device of this character adapted to be inserted in the opening in the chimney-breast or any other opening where a pipe connection is desired and provided with means for effectively retaining the thimble in the opening and locking the stovepipe within the thimble.

A further object of the invention is to provide a thimble formed from a single piece of sheet metal or similar material bent into cylindrical form and provided with one or more inwardly-extending integral stops, whereby the stovepipe is prevented from projecting beyond the end of the thimble and obstructing the flue. I

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts. hereinafter described, illustratedin the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the thimble. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation showing the thimble in achimneybreast. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a different manner of fastening the pipe to the thimble. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of a further modification.

on radial lines, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. One of the tongues may remain unbent to form an ear or lug 8, or a number of such ears may be formed, each provided with an opening 9, adapted to receive a wire 10,which passes around the elbow (not shown) of the pipes 11, being fastened there to in any suitable manner.

The rear end of the LllllllblG is provided with a series of longitudinal slits 13, forming tongues 14, adapted to be bent radially against the inner wall of the flue and retain the thimhis in place. One or more of the end tongues 14, formed by the slits 13, are bent inwardly at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the thimble, forming a stop or stops 15 for the end of the pipe 11, preventing the same from projecting beyond the end of the thimble and obstructing the flue. A collar 16 is also provided, which rests on the stovepipe and also extendsover the ear or cars 8 being locked against the 'face of the chimney-breast by the wire 10 passing through the opening in said ear or ears.

In practice the thimble is inserted in the opening in the chimney-breast with the annular flange resting against the face thereof and the end tongues lebent radially against the inner wall of the fine by inserting the hand or a tool through the thimble. The pipe is then placed in the thimble with the end thereof in contact with the stop, the pipe-collar fitting over the car, as shown, after which the wire is passed through the opening in the lug 8 and fastened in any suitablemanner to the elbow, (not shown,-) which secures the pipe and collar to the thimble.

In Fig. 3 I have shown a different manner of fastening the pipe to the thimble. In this case an opening 17 is punched or otherwise formed in the pipe 11 coincident with the opening 9 in the ear 8, and a pin or nail 18 is passed through the two openings to secure the pipe to the thimble and hold the collar in proper position.

In some cases the flange at the outer end of the thimble may be formed by flaring the metal outwardly without the necessity of slitting, and in such cases a pair of incisions or slits are made on the flange to form the ear, as indicated at 8' in Fig. 4 of thedrawings.
