CLINTON A. TOVER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE NATIONAL TION OF OHIO.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,265, dated November 24, 1903.
Original applicatiln led May 29, 1902, Serial No. 109,477. vDivided and thisI application filed May 2, 1903. Serial No. 155.250,
(No model.)
T0 all wtorn it 17m/y concern.-
Be it known that I, CLINTON A. TOWER, of Cleveland, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Car-Ooupler,of which the following is a ful1,clear,and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which* Figure l is a horizontal section of a coupler embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the knuckle open. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the coupler.
In the drawings, 2 represents the couplerhead, and dis the knuckle, whosetail 3 eX- tends rearwardly from the pivot-pin 4. The coupler has a locking and opening piece 5, the construction and operation of which are explained in an application. filed by me on May 29, 1902, Serial No. 109,477, of which this application is a division. Vhen the coupler is locked, this piece fits against the forward side of the knuckle-tail, as shown in Fig. 1.
As a protection against displacement of the knuckle in the event of breaking or loss of the pivot-pin I Aform on the rear side of the knuckle-tail, near the position of the pivot 4, a recess 13, tapering outwardly' toward the head of the knuckle, and I form on the coupler-head, near the outer end thereof, a projection 14, adapted to enter and interfit with said recess. The recess in the knuckle is forward of the middle of the knuckle-tail and does not extend to the top and bottom surface thereof, since if it did so the knuckle y would be weakened. The rear end wall of the recess inclines forwardly and outwardly, but on a line eccentric to the axis of the knuckle, so that when the knuckle is opened the rear surface of the recess immediately leaves its bearing on the back of the projection 14, and when the knuckle is closed the said rear surface finds its seat Without sliding on the projection. The knuckle therefore closes with freedom.
By locating the projection and recess near the position of the pivot-pin instead of locating them at the inner end of the tail it is easier to fit them together, and when under draft all tendency of the one to pull away from the other is avoided. Even without the pin the knuckle is held in place with the greatest security. This device also serves'to take strain from the pivot-pin when the p'in is intact, and thus prevents bending of the pin.
I claiml. A coupler having a swinging knuckle, a recess in the rear side of the knuckle-tail, situate forward of the middle of the tail and terminatingshort of the top andbottom surfaces of the knuckle, and a projection on the coupler-head adapted to enter the recess; substantially as described.
2. A coupler-knuckle having on the outer side of its tail, forward of the middle thereof, a recess adapted to receive a projection on the coupler-head, said recess terminating short of the top and bottom surfaces of the kn uckle,
substantially as described. l
3. A coupler-knuckle having on the outer side of its tail, forward of the middle thereof, a recess terminating short of the top and bottom surfaces of the knuckle and adapted to receive a projection on the coupler-head, vsaid recess tapering toward the head of the knuckle and having its rear end wall forwardly and outwardly inclined on aline eccentric to the axis of the knuckle; substantially asdescribed.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
CLINTON TOWER.
