BED-REST.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,234, dated November 24, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J ULIUS' AUGUST PAL- ITZSOH, a subject of the King of Saxony, and a resident of Dresden, Saxony,Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back-Rests, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to back-rests for the support of a person in a sitting or reclining position, specially adapted for-use in supporting wounded or sick persons on lounges, beds, or stretchers, but equally well adapted for use by any persons and upon any substantially level surface.

The object of the invention is to provide a back-rest of improved and economical construction and of great efficiency.

With this object in view the invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts of a backrest, as hereinafter fully described and afterward specifically claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a back-rest constructed in accordance with this invention, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the back-rest in upright or operative position as it would appear set up upon any surface. Fig. 2 represents the same in front elevation. Fig. 3 represents the same in side elevation as in use on a bed. Fig. at represents the'same in side elevation folded up for storage or transportation. Fig. 5 represents, on an enlarged scale, a joint for use in the construction of the back-rest.

Like letters of reference mark the same parts wherever they appear in the several figures of the drawings.

Referring to the drawings by letters,a, Figs. 1 to 4, indicates side sections of rods or bars of metal, either solid or tubular, wood, cane, or similar material, bent so as to rest at its lower ortions a u on a bed loun e or.

stretcher or upon the ground or any other substantially level surface, while its side sections,preferably curved,recline slightly backward, the lower portions being preferably joined by a curved section d, resting upon the supporting-surface of a proper length to hold the side sections at a distance apart slightly wider than the body of an ordinary person. At the upper ends of side sections a they are connected by a backwardly-curved bar 0, and

by means of suitable tubular joints of elbow shape, as at f, there are connected the upper ends of bent bars I), extending backward and downward into T connections on the lower sections a.

Hinged in any suitable manner, as to joints f, as shown in Fig. 1, are supporting legs or props h to rest upon the ground or other surface and maintain the back-rest in operative position.

Between and secured to the side sections a is canvas or the like material 71 of a sufficient length and width to support the body and head of an invalid or wounded or other person, the construction permitting the canvas to give sufficiently to conform to the body and head of the person, andthus afiord an easy, comfortable support.

As shown in Fig. 1, the back-rest may be used on the ground or any similar surface, and as in Fig. 3 it maybe used on a bed, a lounge, or in any position which afiords a support other than props or legs h, in which latter case these legs will be held up out of the way by suitable fastenings k.

A suitable hinge-joint is shown on an enlarged scale in Fig. 5, which may be used, if desired, in connecting curved bar d to the main frame.

When the parts, such as a and d, are made of wood or similar material, they may be spliced or connected by metal tubes or sleeves g.

In Fig. 5 is shown a hinge-joint suitable for connecting parts of my structure, g and 9 showing tubes or sleeves of metal, and g a rivet or pin connecting two parts, as a and (1 said parts previously having had said sleeves placed on their ends to protect them.

This invention may be used with great advantage by sick, wounded, or convalescent persons on beds or lounges, or upon the field of battle, or in temporary or permanent hospitals, and is equally useful as an easy and luxurious back-support for persons in the best of health.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

l. A back-rest comprising bars bent to form inclining side sections bent backward at their lower ends, backwardly-curved sections by which they are joined at both upper and lower ends, baokwardly-curved rear side bars secured at their upper and lower ends to the side sections, props hinged at their upper ends at the junction of the side sections and rear side bars, substantially as described.

The herein-described back-rest com prising side sections a, lower bent ends a, curved connecting-bars c and d, back bars I), and props h, in combination with elbow tubular joints 1, T-joints between the lower bent ends and back bars, and the hinge-joints at the upper ends of the props, substantially as described.
