PATENT OFFICE.
LATCH.
S?ECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,189, dated November 24, 1903.
Application filed April 8, 1903.
To all whom it' may concern:
Beit known that I, OMER F. IMMELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blair, in the county of Trempealeau and State of Wiscousin, have invented a new and useful (latch for Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in latches for barn-doors, Windowblinds, and the like.
The object of the-invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device of this character adapted to be applied to an ordinary door or shutter without requiring the employment of skilled labor and capable of securely holding a door or shutter in anopen position to prevent the same being accidentally closed by the wind or otherwise.
A further object of the invention is to provide a latch which will be automatic in its operation in locking the door or shutter in an open position and which may be readily operated from the inner face of saidy door or shutter in closing the same.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit o r sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of a door-latch constructed in accordance with myinvention, showing the same applied to a door; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view illustrating the position of the parts when the door is open. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of a portion of the door, showing the manner of supporting the latch-rod; and Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures of the drawings.
l designates a portion of a door-a barn-door v in the present instance-and 2 my improved latch. The latch 2, which may be formed 0f metal or other suitable material, is prefer- Serial No.151l645. (No model.)
ably formed of a single piece of wire or light bar-iron and comprises a body portion 3, consisting of a horizontally-disposed rod loosely mounted in bearings 4, secured in any suitable manner to the outer face of the door. One end of the rod or body portion 3 is bent at right angles thereto, as shown at 4', and thon outwardly in the same plane as the rod to form a catch 5, which extends a short distance beyond the edge of the door, the opposite end of the rod passing through a slot or opening 6 in the door, being bent at right angles to the catch 5 to form a loop or handle 7. One of the bearing-plates 4 is secured to the door directly over the slot or opening 6, serving to close said opening and also to support the end of the latch, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
The catch 5 engages a keeper 8 of any suitable form and construction and by means of which the doorisheldin the open position.' The slot or opening 6 is preferably formed with a. lower inclined or beveled Wall 9, which permits the handle 7 to move vertically therein, and said handle being heavier than the catch 5 will drop by gravity and normally resten the inclined wall of the slot, causing the catch 5 to be thrown outwardly from the face of the door and in position to engage the keeper when the door is opened.
The operation of the device is as follows: When it is desired to lock the door in the open position, said door is swung outwardly, the catch automatically engaging the keeper and preventing the door from being accidentally closed. By lifting the handle 7 the catch is l disengaged from its keeper, andy by pulling inwardly on said handle the door may be easily closed.
From the foregoing description it Will be seen that I have provided an exceedingly simple and inexpensive latch and one that is adapted to be readily manufactured and capable of being quickly and easily applied to a door or window without the employment of skilled labor. It will also be seen that it is capable of securely holding ,a door, Windowblind, or other hinged member in an open position to prevent the same being accidentally closed by the wind or otherwise and that the loop or handle is located at the inner face of the door, adjacent the hinged end thereof, in
IOO
a convenient position to ybe readily grasped by the operator for enabling the door or Window-blind being readily closed.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A latch comprising a rod, one end of which is provided with an angularly-disposed Weighted handle the opposite end thereof being bent at right angles to the handle and terminating in an outwardly-extending catch disposed in the same plane with the rod and adapted to engage a keeper.
2. The combination with a door,of a keeper, bearings secured to the door, a latch comprising a horizontally-disposed rod pivotally mounted in the bearings and having one end thereof extending through an opening in the door and bent to form a Weighted handle, the opposite end of the rod being bent at right zo angles to the handle and terminating in an outwardly-extending catch disposed in the same plane with the rod and adapted to engage a keeper.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 25 my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
OMER F. IMMELL.
