PATENT OFFICE.
PlCKER-STICK CONNECTION FOR LOOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,143, dated November 24, 1903.
Application filed April 7 1903. Serial No. 151,490. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern.- 7
Be it known that I, J OSEPH A. BOTTOMLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwich, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Picker-Stick Connections for Looms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to picker-stick connection for looms; and'the object of the same is to construct a device of this character which will be simple in construction, not liable to be broken, but easy to repair, and more efficient than the ordinary lug-strap connection.
The novel construction employed by me in carrying out my invention is fully described and claimed in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device. Fig. 2 is a detail of the clam p. Fig. 2 is an elevation of one of the clamping-plates. Fig. 3 is a detail of the connecting-rod head. Fig. 4 is a detail of the U. Fig. 5 isa detail of the rock-arms.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the diiferent views of the drawings.
The numeral 1 designates a part of the frame of a loom which supports a bracketarm 2, to which a picker-stick 3 is pivoted. Adj ustably mounted on the picker-stick 3 is a clamp 4, comprising two parallel plates 5, the inner faces of which are traversed by grooves 6 to accommodate the stick 3. The clamping-plates 5 are substantially rectangular and have an aperture 7 formed in each corner to accommodate threaded cross-pins 8, which serve to secure the plates 5 together. Barbs 9 are formed on the inner faces of the plates 5 to hold them against slipping. Slots 10 are cut in projecting ears 10, formed on the'clamping-plates 5, and these slots are engaged by oppositely-extending elliptical lugs 11, formed on a head 12 of. a connecting-rod 13. The head member is bifurcated at 14 to accommodate the body 15 of the connectingrod 13, which is secured thereto by cross-pins 16. A U-shaped member 17 is mounted on the other end of the body member 15, and the arms 18 are secured by cross-pins 19. The
.rounded portion 20 of the U extends far enough beyond the end of the body to form a loop which engages a hooked head 21, formed on the outer end of a rock-arm 22. The arm 22 is formed in two sections 23 and 24, the section 24 being traversed longitudinally'by a groove 25, having non-parallel or diverging sides, which is engaged by the flaring shank of the member 23. The sections 23 and 24 are secured together by a bolt 26. This enables one part of the arm to be replaced without removing the other. The lower end of the section 24 has a hub 27 formed thereon, having an angular aperture 28 therein, which fits the squared end 29 of a rock-shaft 30, journaled in an arm 31, secured to the frame 1.
In operation the shaft 30 is driven from some source of power (not shown) to intermittently actuate the rock-arm 22 and operate the picker-stick 3. To vary the stroke of the stick to enable the shuttle to be driven with greater or less force as the work requires, the
I do not wish to be limited as to details ofconstruction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' "1. In a connection for picker-sticks, the
combination of a picker-stick, two clampingplates embracing said picker-stick and hav ing slotted ears formed thereon, means for securing said plates together, a connecting-rod provided with a head bearing two oppositelyextendinglugs engaging said slots',and arockarm connected to the other end of said connecting-rod, substantially as described.
2. In a picker-stick connection for looms, the combination of a two-part clamp applied tical lateral lugs engaging said slots, a sectional arm, with one section connected to said connecting-rod, and actuating means connected to the other section of said arm.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH A. BOTTOMLEY.
