PATENT FFICE.
COMPOSITION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,050, dated November 24, 1903. Application filed August 18, 1903. Serial No. 169,939. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS OASSILDA GAUV- REAU, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compositions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a composition, and has for its object to provide a substitute for laths and plaster now generally used in the construction of buildings.
Another object of my invention is to provide a composition which may be readily molded into any desired form, preferably that of a board of any convenient size, which-may be used in the place of laths and plaster, the same being nailed or otherwise secured to the joist of a building forming the walls and ceiling.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a composition composed of difierent ingredients wherein the same is rendered fireproof.
Briefiy described,my improved composition is adapted to be used for moldings, cornicework, and the like and may be conveniently formed into boards of any desired size which may be nailed to the joist in a similar manner as the laths are secured, and if it is desired after the boards have been placed in position a coating of whiting may be placed thereon, whereby a plastered effect is derived.
' To put my invention into practice, I use the following ingredients: pulp, shavings, glue, plaster, fiber, and whiting. The first-named article, pulp, is made of ordinary paper, lye, and alum-water, the lye being used to thoroughly disintegrate the paper and form a paste, to which the second article, shavings, is added. These shavings may be of the ordinary planing-mill kind,-and a medium size is preferred. The next three articles-namely, glue, plaster, and fiber-may be of the ordinary consistency to that now used, and the whiting, which is the lastingredient applied, may be used or not, as may be desired. This whiting is employed to give a plaster effect to the board and make the same light in weight and a brittle nature to the board.
The boards may be formed by any desired mold into useful shapes and forms, and when these boards have been formed I may paint or coat the same with alum-water, so as to make a smooth and clean surface to the boards. While I have not stated the amount or percentage of each article used, it is obvious that I may employ any desired amount or percentage as will be found advantageous to the composition. It will also be noted that my improved composition may be used in partitions, flooring, and the like to a great advantage, as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A composition composed of pulp, shavings, glue, plaster, fiber and whiting, said pulp being formed of paper, lye and alumwater.
2. A composition composed of pulp, shavings, glue, plaster, fiber and Whiting, said pulp being formed of paper, lye and alumwater, said ingredients being thoroughly mixed, substantially as described.
3. A composition embodying pulp, shavings, glue, plaster and fiber, said pulp composed of paper, lye and alum-water.
