BUNGw-HOLE STAVE.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 744,879, dated November 24, 1903 Application filed March 28, 1903. Serial No. 150,005. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that LFRANK XAVER SCHLEICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Bung-Hole Stave,of which the following is a specification.
My invention isan improvement in bunghole staves; and the object is to construct a stave of this character which will not be weaker than the other staves of the barrel and which will not be liable to injury by the driving. of the bung therein.
My invention consists in forming the bungstave in three sections, the central or bung section being formed of metal, and of providing such means for securing this metallic section to the wooden sections that the driving of the bung will serve to force the sections into closer engagement.
The details of my improvement are described hereinafter and are particularly poi nt ed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a barrel having a bungstave constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the stave, the sections being united. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional View about on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. iis a perspective view of the stave, showing the sections detached. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the bung.
In constructing my improved stave I employ the upper and lower sections AA, which are of wood, and a central rectangular section B, which I prefer to make of metal, but which may be made of wood, if desired. The section B is of substantially the same thickness as the end sections and has the bunghole B formed centrally in it. The upper and lower edges of this section are grooved or mortised, as shown at B while the side edges are smooth and when the stave is complete are flush with the side edges of the end sections A and A. v
On the lower edge of the section A is formed a tongue A*, which is adapted to fit tightly into the mortise B formed in the upper edge of the metal section. On the upper edge of the section A is a tongue A which is adapted to fit into the mortise on the lower edge of the central section, said sections and grooves being so curved and arranged that when the three sections are fitted together a complete stave of the proper curvature will be formed, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
By making the mortise slightly contracted toward the bottom and making the tongue correspondingly tapered it is evident that when the tongue is originally forced or driven into the mortise or subsequently by the blows upon the bung or at one side thereof the joints between the sections of the stave will be made tighter and tighter, thereby virtually decreasing the'liability of damage or leakage at that point the longer the stave is in use.
After the sections have been assembled the staveso formed can be incorporated in a barrel O, and in a stave so constructed the drivin g of the bung will serve to force the tongues of the upper and lower sections more tightly into the grooves of the central section, thus binding the parts more firmly together.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A bung-stave comprising a central and end sections, the central section being rectangular and of substantially the same width and thickness as the end sections and provided with a bung-hole, the side edges of said section being smooth and flush with the side edges of the end sections, and each of the other two edges being mortised transversely of the stave, each of the mortises being contracted toward its bottom, and each of the end sections having its inner end provided with a tapering tongue to fit into its respective mortise in the central section.
