YZPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 744,820, dated November 24, 1903.
Application filed January 23,1903. Serial No 140.239. (No model).
T0 (10% whom, it may concern;
Be it known that I, MARINIUS S. THonUn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Latches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates more particularly to that class of door-latches especially designed for heavy doors, in which the latch or device which operates the latch is arranged contiguous to the knob or pull by which the door is opened; and my invention has for its primary object to provide an improved and simple form of door-latch in which the door is unlocked or unlatched by the same action of the hand which is required to open it.
With these ends in view my invention consists in certain features of novelty in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts by which the said objects and certain other objects hereinafter appearing are attained, all as fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved latch partially broken away, showing it applied to a door in section. Fig. 2 is a plan section thereof on the irregular line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail section on the line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 1, illustrating a modification hereinafter described; and Fig. 5 is a plan section on the line 5 5, Fig. 4:.
1 is the door, which is provided with a mortise-lock 2 of the usual or-any suitable con.- struction, having an ordinary bolt or latch 3, which may be operated, as usual, by a vertically-movable slide 4., ordinally located at the lower edge of the lock-casing in a notch or recess 5, as better shown in Fig. 3, in position to be engaged and elevated by a lever or other member which has heretofore been connected with some outside operatingmember,whereby the vertical oscillation of said lever will raise the slide a and withdraw the bolt or latch 3, all of which parts may be of the usual or any suitable construct-ion. According to my invention this slide 4 is engaged by one arm, 6, of a bell-crank lever, which is pivoted to a pair of cars 7, preferably formed on the inner face of an escutcheon 8, and has its other arm, 9, extending upwardly behind the escntcheon within a recess 10. This arm 9 of the bellcrank is pivoted to one end of a link or rod 11, which preferably extends through a hollow arm 12 of the pull or handle which is constituted by said arm 12, another arm, 13, and a handle proper, let. The outer end of the rod 11 is pivotally or otherwise suitably secured to the upper end of a movable member 15, which preferably constitutes the inner side of the handle 1 1 and is depressible within said handle, which is hollow, so that the one act of grasping the handle 14 to open the door will also raise the slide 4 and unlock or unlatch the door. 1
The connection between the arm 9 of the bell-crank and the rod 11 may be conveniently effected by providing the upper end of the arm 9 with a shouldered hook 16 and passing said hook through a suitable slot or perforation 17 in the arm 11, the shoulder 18 of the arm 9 serving to support the rod 11 against downward movement. The connection between the outer end of rod 11 and the member 15 may be effected by a similar constructionnamely, a lug 19 on the upper end of member 15 passing through a slot or aperture 20 in the rod 11. The lower end of the member 15 is preferably pivoted to the handle proper, 14, so that it may act as a lever for pulling the rod 11. This pivotal connection is produced by passing a bar or pivot 21 through the member 14 and through slots 22 in the lower end of the member 15, the slots 22 being open at their lower ends, so that the member 15 may be removed through the upper end of the member 14. when desired, the upper end of member lat being closed by a cap or plug 23.
In assembling the parts the member 15, which is composed of asheet of material bent or formed substantially semicircular in crosssection, is dropped into the upper end of hollow member 14,'with the slots 22 engaging over the pivot 21. WVhen in this position, the member 15 will fill the open inner side of the member 14 from the arm 12 to the arm 13, the ends of member 15 being rounded, as shown at 24., to make them fit the arms 12 13. Af-
ter this has been done the rod 11 is inserted through the arm 12 and one end hooked over hook 16, while the other end is hooked over the lug or hook 19. The parts thus assembled and connected to the escutcheon 8 are now ready to be applied to the door with the arm 6 engaging under the slide 4.
In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the bell-crank, instead of being pi voted to ears 7, formed on the escutcheon, is constituted by a bent lever provided with a crook 25, which is passed through a suitable aperture 26 in the escutcheon immediately I behind or opposite the end of the arm 12, and
by thus saddling the lever in this aperture it is afforded the requisite pivotal movement. One end, 6, of the lever engages the slide 4, as before described, while the other end or arm, 9 extendswithin the hollow arm 12 and is, pivotally connected to the outer end of the rod 11 in any suitable waysuoh, for example, as by turning it upward to constitute a hook 27, which is engaged by a downturned end or hook 28 on the rod 11.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' 1. In a device for the purpose described the combination of a latch proper, adoor-pull comprising an open-sided tubular handle portion and a tubular supporting arm portion extending laterally therefrom, a pivot extending across said handle portion,a laterally-movable member supported at its lower end on said pivot in said open side and removable therefrom longitudinally of the handle por' tion and a connection between the upper end of said member and latch proper.
2. In a device for the purpose described the combination with a latch proper, of a doorpull comprising an open-sided tubular handle portion anda tubular supporting arm portion extending laterally therefrom, a pivot extending across said handle portion, a laterally-movable member located in said open side of the handle portion and having its lower end slotted and supported on said pivot and means connecting the upper end of said member with the latch proper. I
3. In a device for the purpose described the combination with a latch proper, of a doorpull comprising an open-sided tubular handle portion and a tubular supporting arm portion extending laterally therefrom, a pivot extending across said handle portion, a laterally-movable member arranged in the open sideofsaid handle portion and supported upon said pivot and removable from said handle portionlongitudinallythereofwhen depressed thereinto and detachable means for connecting the upper end of said laterally-movable member with said lat-ch proper and also serving to limit the inward movement of said member to prevent longitudinal dispacement thereof.
4. In a device for the purpose described the combination with a latch proper, of a doorpull comprising an open-sided tubular handle portion, and a tubular supportingarm portion projecting laterally therefrom contiguous to the upper end of the opening in the side thereof, a laterallymovable member supported at its lower end in said handle portion and protruding through the open side thereof contiguous to and under said arm portion and means extending through said arm portion for connecting said member to said latch proper.
5. In a device for the purpose described the combination with a latch proper, of a doorpull comprising an open-sided tubular handle portion and a tubular supporting arm portion extending laterally therefrom, a laterally-movable member supported in the open side of said handle portion and removable through said handle portion longitudinally thereof when depressed within said handle portion, an upwardly-projecting hook or lug on the upper end of said member, a lever for operating said latch proper and a link having an eye in each end fitting over said lug and lever respectively and extending through said arm portion whereby said link may be removed or detached from said member to permit the latter to be removed longitudinally from said handle portion.
