To ALL wHoM 1er-MAY'V coNoERN:
v Beit known that I, Joann Wemnof Spnrtansbiirgh, in the county of Cranford, tndState'of Pennsylvania, hure invented u. new and improved Washing-Machine; and I do hereby declare thc-'following to be a full, clear,
.and exact description of the same, sucientto enable those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make use of it, reference boingv had vto the accompanying drawings, forming part of this spcciiication, in wnih A Figure 1 is o. longitudinal verticalse'ction.
Figure 2 is a. top view. l
This invention combines an improved method of rubbing the clothes with a. novel dcyice for adjusting the rubbing-blocks to the quantity oi' clothes orsize of them-ticle in the wnsh, nn-dn device for holding the'clothes during the process of washing.
In the drawings, A represents the body of the-machine, containing the clothes und tho water in ivhich Vthey are washed.v It is supported on legs, B B, mounted ontrucks, C C, andis provided with n ccrrugntcd bottom,
D. E are two stout heavy rubbing-blocks, corrugated on their under side',`a`nd;haring a reciprocating motion, each alternating with the other, along the bottom of theehember A. Thcvciothcs nre'plnced under these blaelts,
Aand ureby them rubbed inl the water until perfectly cleansed. -Theruhbirrg-bloclts :ire operated bytwo` levers,
F F, pivoted, at or -nenr their middle, upona rod`,'G, that extends across the infochine'.' The levers, at ltheir lower end, nre hinged to the rubbing-blocks, and nt their upper end irre conne-ctcd'by. pittnen, H H, to e double: crank-shaft, I, operated by a crank,` J. ABetween the iubbing-bldcks o stoutfbent 'nrni,.M, is located, the rear end of which `is pivotd to the shaft G. From the shaft G it extends 'foriviird horizont-ally, and then bends downward, its lower end reistngon theclothes between the rubbing'blocks, for tho-purpose o'f hclding'them in place while the rubbing-blocks areV passing over them. The lower end of 'thel orm'M is notched orcorruguted, ns shown at n n n n, iig. 1, for the purpose of holding the clothes more firmly. The ro'd G bears in two posts,
K K,each of which bestridcs thev wall of the box A, the Wolllv beingv vertically groovei on its' inne'r surface, to.
receive and steady them. The postsroro adjusted h'i'ghcr org-lower by moans of keys, L L, constructed as shown in fig. 1, having n serios of Steps,`l l, one or another of which can be brought'uder the post, thus fixing the latter in' a.. higher or lower position on thcbox. As 'the posts are thusr'aissd or lowered, they elevate or depress the rubbing-`olocks, and solndjust the latter to the quantity of clothes in' the wash under them.4 m m are hooks, by Willich either of thc blocks can be lixod in a. position out otthe way, as shown in fig. 1, while the clothes are being handled, placed in thc vessel, or removed from it.'
Having thus described my invention, wha't I claim as new, and desire to secure byrLcttoxs Patent, is 1. The combination of the crankshaft I, ptmen II Il, levers F F, and corrugated blocks EFgwvhcn used Vin connection with a box, Almving a corrugatcdhottom,D, in the mcnncr'and for the purpose'speciied.
2. The'combi-nation of lthe stepdseys 'L L withthc forked posts K K, supporting the rod G, and rendering the rubbing-blocks E E adjustable in height, substantially ns and for the purpose specified. The combination of the hinged blocks EE .withthe hooks m m `end 'levors F F, by which the blocksEE cnn-be lifted out ofthe way when necessary, substantially in the ima-nner described.
4. The arm M, forthe purpose of holding the clothes in place while the rubbing-blocks ure passing over them, substantially as described.
