FEED MECHANISM FOR CALENDER-ROLLS 0F PAPER-MAKING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 743,403, dated November 3, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD SMITH, a citizeu of the Dominion of Canada, residing at. Bellows Falls, in the county of Windham and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed Mechanism for Paper-MakingMachines,(Calender-Rolls,)
of which the following is a specification.
My present improvements are based upon a method of conducting the paper of papermaking machines through the calender-rolls thereof, (shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States No. 327 ,031, issued to myself on the 29th day of September, 1885,) which? consists in the employment with a stack of rolls of a series of alternately oppositely disposed curved deflector or guide plates whichare practically concentric with and partially surrounding said rolls, these guideplates functioning to automatically conduct the end of the paper sheet between the rolls, and thereby avoid danger'to the machine tender, as well as to reduce to the minimum the amount of broken paper. resulting from the mending up, so called, of a break in the paper.
These improvements will be seen to consist in the construction of the doctor-that is, the, device employed to prevent the winding of the paper about the roll, as well as to scrape from the surface of the roll any foreign substances which might otherwise adhere there to--and also in the mannerof mounting the said doctor and in the construction of the mechanical devices by which the latter is operated or adjusted.
In carrying out these improvements I construct the body of the doctor in tubular form (either cylindrical or angular in cross-section) and of wrought sheet metal in lieu of cast metal, as heretofore, by which construction I obtain lightness, which enables the doctor and its supports to be easily handled, and rigidity and stiffness,which obviates the liability to sag and crack to which the cast metal is subject. j a

The mechanical devices for supporting and for adjusting the .doctor to the periphery of the roll consist in mounting each of its trunnions upon a verticallyadjustable carrier which is supported by and is susceptible of vertical adjustment upon vertical rods or bars secured in a suitable manner to the housings of the machine-frame, and in the combination, with such carrier, of two elastic mediums, which function,'one to effect an automatic adjustment of the entire doctor bodily toward the roll and theother to effect an automatic adjustment of the scraper-blade of the doctor upon the body thereof with respect to said roll, by which constant contact between the scraper and roll is maintained.
To prevent lifting or jumping of the doctor in its bearings, I employ a horizontal lockinglatch or turn-button, which constitutes the upper end of a vertical rod which is vertically adjustable within a bracket or extension formed upon or secured to the inner side of the trunnion-carrier before named, the free end of said latch extending (in its locked position) over and upon the top of a lug secured laterally to the body of the doctor. For security the under side of the free end of the latch may carry a spur to enter a corresponding depression countersunk in the top of the lug before named, by which means accidental release of .the latch is prevented.
To provide meansfor lifting the latch when it is to bereleased, I employ in the present instance a horizontal hand-lever or shipper, which is pivoted at its base to the lower part of the trunnion-carrier and is swiveledin any suitable manner to thelower end of the rod before named as carrying the latch. The outer edge of the-scraper-plate is secured rigidly to a light horizontal bar extending the entire length of the calender-roll, the inner or free edge of the said scraper-plate hearing as a .matter of course against the under side of the roll and as shown in my Letters Patent before cited. The horizontal bar is in turn secured to the inner edge of a horizontal plate of equal length, the outer edge ofthis plate being sccured to. the top fg f the body of the doctor;
To eifect automatically a pressure or adjustment of the scraper-plate directly upon the calender-roll through the agency ofthe latch upon the lug, rock or slightly turn the body of the doctor upon its trunnions, and crowd the scraper-plate against the roll, as
well as to prevent accidental-lifting and un-- ifheing exerted between a shoulder upon said red and a nut screwed within the mouth of the bore of the bracket and operating by de-. pressing the latch upon thelug before named to ro'ck the. doctor upon its trunnions and force the scraper up to the roll, as well as to "prevent accidental lifting and "unlocking of 20 the latch. v
To effect the desired adjustment of the doctor and its supports bodily toward the calender-roll, I employ in the present instancea coiled spring-which functions be a 5 tween the under side of the trunnion-carrier and a collar secured to a vertical column which extends from 'top to bottom of the housings of the machine-frame and is securedto such housings in any suitable manner, this column'constituting the main'support-of the doctor and its adjuncts.

inner side of the trunnion-carrier 7, the free end of this latch (when in a locked position) bearing upon the top of a lateral lug 13, secured to the body of the doctor. For security theunder side of the free end of the latch 1 may carry a spur 14 to enter a corresponding countersunk depression in the top of the lug 13, this spur preventing accidental turning and unlocking of the latch.
To effect the'lifting of the latch IO'against the. stress of the spring which tends to depress it, I employ in the present instancea "horizontal'h-and-lever' orshipper 16, which is pivoted at its base to the lower part of the swiveled in any suitable manner to the lower end of therod 11. When it is desired to remove a doctor, the rod' .11 is by means of the hand -'lever' 16 raised, the latch 10 turned to one side, and the trunnions oi" the doctor left free to be lifted .out of their bearings.
The scraper-plate of the doctor, which i h shown'at 17, is secured at'its outer edge to a 1 light horizontal bar 18, extending the entire length of the calender-roll, the inner or free end of'this scraper bearing, as before premised, upon the under side of the roll.v .The bar 18 is in turn secured at its outer edge to the inner edge, of a plat-e 18 of equal length, the outer edge of this latter platebeing secured to the body of the doctor 4.

They may be of one sheet of metal with the plate 22 or independent of the latter, which is secured at its inner edge to the under side of the bar 18, before named, and at its outer edge to the under side of the tube 4 of-the doctor.
The tube 4 and plates 18' and 22 constitute a trussed body of great strength and lightness.
Thesupports of the lower protector-plate 17, which serve to finally takeoff the paper from the calender-rolls, are constructed similarlyTtothose of the doctorin sofar as the employment of the rod 11, spring 22, handlever 16, and latch 10 are concerned, with the exception that they are reversed in position, top for bottom, while the trunnions of the tube 4 are journaled each in a circular plate 31, confined to the carrier-plate 7 by set screws or bolts 32, operating with concentric slots 33, formed in the said plates 31. The groove for receiving each trunnion is, as shown in Fig. 9 and in dotted lines in Fig. 6 of the drawings, composed of a vertical entranee-way or passage 34, open at top and terminating at bottom in a lateral horizontal extension or pocket The shoulder" 3(i of the groove 3d 36 prevents accidental lifting and upright plate 28, an inner plate which is composed of the curved guide-plate 53 i, before named, the inner edges of 27 and 2t being secured to the bar 18 and the lower edge of 28 secured to said guide-plate 2+,while the outer edge of 27 and the upper edge of 28 are bolted together. The three plates 24, 27, and 28 secured together provide a trussed construction. which, like that shown in the tube 4 and plates 18 and 22 is at once very light, stiff, and strong. \Vhen the said body is quadrangular, pentagonal, hexagonal, or of other angular shape in cross-section, the number of such plates must, of course, be correspondingly increased.
Fig. 10 denotes the manner in which I prefer to construct the trunnions of the body of the doctor, which consists in casting them independent of such body 4,the trunnion proper, 5, being an extension of a body 37, which is of a diametento tightly fill the end of the body l, into which it is tightly driven.
To enable the machinist in setting up a stack of calenders or ap lying a doctor to a stack to rapidly and temporarily ascertain approximately the final position of the doctor, the trunnion-carrier 7 may be made indcpendent of the hub 12 (by which it'is supported in position on the column 3) and the two connected by a spline and groove, as shown at 37 in Fig. 11 of the drawings, and when the permanent position of the doctor is found the two are bolted together, or the spline and groove may be vertical.
I claim- 1.. A tubular doctor provided with trunnions, in combination with the guideplatc and scraper-plates which it supports, a latch for locking the said doctor in position, and automatic normally operative means inde pendent of the said latch, for crowding the scraper-plate directly upon the roll substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with a doctor, a springpressed latch bearin g on a part thereof to hold the said doctor from rising in its bearings substantially as set forth.

In combination with a calender-roll, a doctor, a scraper carried thereby, a spring which forces the doctor bodily toward the cal ender-rolland an additional spring which acts to rock the doctor upon its trunnions toward the saidcalender roll substantially as set et.
