PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. PI-IAIL, OF FLUSHIN G, YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ABBOT AUGUSTUS LOW, OF HORSESHOE, NEW YORK.
KEROSENE-ENGINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 743,097, dated November 3, 1903.
Application filed December 26, 1902.; Serial No. 136,585. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. PHAIL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Flushing, Queens county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Im-' provements in Kerosene-Oil Engines,of which the following is a specification sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to motors in which kerosene-oil is injected, vaporized, and exploded to impart motion to the piston, and particularly to that class of motors in which an internal ignition-chamber is situated in the combustion-chamber.
The object of myinvention is to insure the perfect admixture of air and vaporized kerosene and the circulation of the, same freely through the combustion-chamber and igniter substantially as hereinafter set forth, whereby the whole charge is instantaneously flashed and perfect combustion is attained, thereby avoidingirregularity in action and the formation or collection of solid products of combustion within the igniter and combustionchamber.
In the accompanying drawing the figure shows the parts of a kerosene-oil engine essential to an understanding of my invention.
A is a cylinder in which the piston B reciprocates in the usual manner.
O is a combustion-chamber formed in the head of the cylinder. In thiscombustionchamber O is situated my improved igniter D, which may be of any desired form or configuration, the essential feature of construction in this respect consisting in the fact that its walls are formed with numerous holes or perforations d, through which the air and hydrocarbon vapor are free to circulate.
F is an electric sparking device or igniter of any of the well-known forms, disposed within an extension'of the incandescent igniter and arranged to flash the charge within the latter in a manner which will be readil understood. I
I do not confine myself to the identical form and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawing, since my improved igniter may be used in conjunction with vari- V ous forms of sparking or flashing devices or without the latter where other means for preliminary heating are resorted to; nor is the form of oil-injector E essential, since any device for precipitating the oil into or against the igniter D may be substituted for the injector E. (Shown in the drawing by way of illustration.)
As heretofore constructed no adequate provision has been made for a thorough circulation and admixture of the air and hydrocarbon oil or vapor, resulting in anuncertainty and slowness of action as well as in imperfect combustion, the latter resulting in the production of solid products of combustion, which impair the utility of the engine. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a kerosene-oil engine,the combination with the piston-cylinder, of a dome-shaped combustion-chamber and a globular-shaped igniter situated in said combustion-chamber purpose set forth.
3. In a kerosene-oil engine, the combination with a piston-cylinder and a combustionchamber formed with the head thereof, of'an igniter of globular form disposed within said combustion-chamber and having its side and end walls provided with perforations, and an inlet for the oil, an oil-injecting device for projecting oil in line with said opening, and an electric sparking device disposed within said igniter.
. GEORGE A. PHAIL.
