Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. Z429, dated June 11, 1850.
' I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.
The nature of myinvention consists in constructing the mattress, bed, or cushion in such a manner that it can be used on either side and folded or rolled up whenever occasion mayrequire, and the same can be stuifed with hail, moss, or any other suitable substance.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct the frames of my mattresses, beds, or cushions of three or more sections, of wood, iron, or other suitable substance, which sections may be solid or open and framed together, as exhibited in the annexed drawing and marked A, and said sections may bo placed lengthwise or crosswise, as occasion may require. These sections are so connected together by-hinges composed of webbing or other suitable substance (which hinges are marked C on said drawing) that they may be folded either way at pleasure. Lengthwise across each section, if open, is fixed one or more -strip or strips of webbing orother suitable substance, as indicated on said drawingV by4 the letter B, upon which are fixed spiral springs (marked D on said drawing) projecting three inches or more above and below the surface of the sections, which springs produce elasticity in the mattress, bed, or cushion, and if the sections are solid the springs are iixedon each side, eX- tending outward about three inches.
