lowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and Operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in which the figure in the drawings The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of a stationary grooved upright, sliding elongated ratchet, lever and pawls, swingingdever and grappling-iron, for loading or unloading logs, stones, hay, orany other article on or from a wagon.

To enable any one skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construc- Y tion and operation. A

' A. is'the wagon, B the upright attached to rear end of the wagon. It is providedwith a groove, in which the hack edge of the ratchet C is placed, the'groove being s'uicientlyloose for it to' slide freely `11p and down therein, and secured thereto by plates, a a, bent around and over thc front edgervof the ratchet, and fastenedinto the upright. D is a pawl, for supporting and holding the ratchet vertically. is a lever, with a pawl, b, atits end, and having its fulcrum, F, attached to the top of the upright. 4Gr is the swinging-lever, provided with a socket and with a pivot, e, 'of the ratchet (which irs-constructed on the top of it) fitting therein.'V H is the grappling-iron, with double prongs on one side and single onthe other'. It is secured byV chain and ring to the hook of the lever. Theswinging-lever, grappling-iron, and ratchet can easily be taken apart and removed from the wagon at any time.` l S t Operation: The lever G, being swung around to one side of the wagon, the grappling-iron H is lowered andfastened to the article to be raised, which is done by bearing down on the other enchof thelever, and when `the' articlerhas been raised high enough the lever is swung back, and the same laid on the'wagon, and the iron disengaged therefrom. If it is found that the ratchet C is too high or too lowfor a convenient'handling of the lever G in depositingl the article, or when beginning to raise it on the wagon, hy releasing the pawl D from the teeth of the ratchet, and taking holdl of the lever E, and raising it up or pressing it down, the ratchet may/be lowered or raised to the height desired.. Ineither ease the pawl D is placed back againto hold the ratchet.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isf l The construction and arrangement of the stationary grooved'upright B, sliding elongated ratchet C, lever E, and pawls b-and D, swinging-lever G, and grappling-iron'H, in combination with a wagon, substantially in the manner and for thepurpose as herein set forth. l
