To ALL' wHoM 1T MAY coNeERN;
Be it known that I, LYMAN B. PRINDLE, of the town and county of Ltcheld, .in the State of Connecticut,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks for wagons, and for other purposes; and i the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had-to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this'speciiicntion, in which- Figure l representen. side view of the jack, with the lifting-lever shownindifferent positions in red and blue lines. Y v
Figure2 are front and perspective views of the extension-pand, as in iig. I
The object of my invention `is sim tion with a. ratchet-lever and single-mortised standard, having a series of notches, in which the fulcrnm of the lever may be placed, according to the height of the article to be lifted. I v
To enable others to make and use my improved Wagon or lifting-jack, I will describe it more in'detnil, referring to the drawings, and to the letters marked thereon.
I make the standard A of a. single piece of herd Wood, having a series of;Y notches, a a a, and` n. long mortise in thc upper end, throughwhich. the lever B passes; the lever B having a. li'ulcrnnmpin, b, t be placed in any of the notches a a a, `then it willbe in the most suitable position to lift the thing to be raised, the lever B being provided with aA ratchet, c c, on its top edge, for the extension-pawl C to work in as the outer end ofthe lever B is depressed. The extension-paWlC may be made with sJ stern, D, which is pivoted-to the upper end of the mortis@ in the standard A, lthe pewl C made to slide on it, having a. slit, e e, through which :1f thn'mhscrew, d, passes to hold it to the stem D in any place it may be desirable to .have it, to hold the weight onthe end'E of the lever B, so that, if the lever-i`ulcrnm is in the lower notches, the pawl minst be elongated to correspond with the position ofthe lever, and also shortened up as the fulcrum of the liever is raisedinthe notches a a a'.
Thus it will readily be seen tha-t a. universel lifting or wagonjack can be made in a. very simple and cheap manner, nnd is always in readiness for use, and can instantly be changed to take hold of the object nt any height within the range or scope of the notches at: a and the opening through the standerd'A, and the liftinglever B be kept in the properposition for the'best action on the weight.
Having thus'fully described my invention, what' I claim as new, and desire to secure hy Letters Patent, is-
The extension-pawl C Dfas constrncted,rin combination with the ratchet or notched lever B, and the single-mortised and notched stnndard A, whereby the fulcrum of the levermay be placed in any position for the height of the article-to be raised, as herein set forth.
