CHAIR FOOT-REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,692, dated October 20, 1903.
Application filed February 25, 1903. Serial No. 145,057. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. MUNDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Unionville, in the county of Monroe and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Chair Foot-Rest, of whichth e following is a specification. v
This invention relates to improvements in chairs, more particularly torocking-chairs, and has for its object to simplify and improve the construction of adjustable foot-rest attachments thereto; and theinvention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described, and specified in the claims.
The device may be attached to any form of easy chair, settee, childs chair, lawn-chairs, invalids chairs, or similar article of furniture and with or without rockers; but for the purpose of illustration the device is shown applied to a rocking-chair of approved form, and in the drawings corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional elevation of a rocking-chair with the improvements applied. Fig. 2 is a front elevation.
The chair-frame is formed of arched side members 11, connected by their ends to the rocker members 12 13 and supporting the seat portion 14.
Attached to the side members 10 11 by one end, as at 15 16, are metal plates 17 18, preferably formed of sheet steel or other suitable metal and twisted one-fourth around and with spaced notches 19 20, respectively, in their inner edges, the teeth extending in- A foot-rest is provided formed of the footsupport 21, having depending ears 22 23 near the ends, the ears connected to the upper ends of side bars 24 25, as by rivets 26 27, while the lower ends of the bars are movably connected to the rocker members, as by bolts or screws 28 29. The bars 24 25 stand across the notched spring-plates 17 18 and are bent slightly to cause them to engage the notches, so that the footsupport may be heldat any desired elevation by the notched plates, as will be obvious. The spring-plates will thus be yieldably supported in position, and the bars 24 25 may be readily adjusted relative thereto, as will be obvious, by manually distending the spring-plates. The notches 19 will be inclined upon one side, so that the foot-support may be moved upward to any desired extent without distending the notched plates by hand; but when the t'oot-rest is to be depressed it will be necessary to distend them by hand. The rivets 26 27 will be sufficiently rigid to hold the support 21 from movement by the foot of the occupant of the chair, but will yield to pressure when it is required to change its angularity relative to the bars 24 and other parts. By this simple arrangement the foot-rest may be adjusted to suit the occupant of the chair or when not required folded back beneath the chair.
The parts are very simple in construction, easily applied and operated, and may be readily attached to any form of chair or other similar article of furniture.
Having thus described the invention, what a foot-rest, spaced clips depending from said foot-rest, bars movably connected by their ends respectively to. said clips and said chair,
and adapted to be yieldably engaged by the notches in said spring-plates, substantially as described.
' 3. The combination with a rocking-chair surmounted with an arched-seat-supporting frame of spring-plates movably connected by one end to said seat-frame and provided with spaced notches, a foot-rest, bars movably connected by one end to the rocker members 5 and by their other ends to said foot-rest and adapted to be yieldably engaged by said notches, substantially as described.
. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my'signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES F. MUNDY.
