Be it known that I, RUDOLF KRONENBERG, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, residing at Ohligs, Prussia, Germany, have invented an Improved Combined Cane and Umbrella or Parasol, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved combined cane and umbrella or parasol which is so constructed that the umbrella or parasol may be readily converted into a walking-cane of the usual dimensions and appearance.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the umbrella-stick; Fig. 2, a detail of the crown-piece; Fig. 3, a detail of the cap; Fig, 4, a detail of the sleeve; Fig. 5,

a detail of the ferrule; Fig. 6, a side view, partly in section, showing the devicefitted up as an umbrella. Fig. 7 is a detail of the tube, and Fig. 8 a side view, partly in section, showing the device fitted up as a cane.

.The umbrella-stick a, which may be made of metal tubing, is reduced in diameter below the handle Z and tapers from top to bottom. At a point above its lower end the stick a has a coniform shoulder 17, adapted to form the seat for a crown-piece c, to which the umbrella or parasol ribs d are pivoted in the usual manner. The crown c terminates below in a socket-piece or sleeve, over which is slid a cap e, so formed that when the umbrella-covering has been passed with its central hole over the crown-piece c the edge of the covering is clamped between the crown o and the cap 6, as shown at Fig. 6. For securing the crown c in its position on the stick a sleeve g, Fig. 4., is slid over the lower end of the stick and is fixed thereon by means of the ferrule h. (Shown separately at Fig. 5.) This ferrule has a threaded hole, by means of which it is screwed onto the threaded end of the stick a, as shown at Fig. 6-. The sleeve 9 presses against the cap e on screwing up the ferrule h and presses it, together with the crown 0, against the shoulder b, so that by this means a secure fixingof the crown c, together with the umbrella-frame and its covering, upon the stick a. is obtained. The umbrella or parasol frame is of the usual construction and is therefore only partly shown at Fig. 6. It will be seen that, for repairing or re-covering the umbrella it is only necessary to unscrew the ferrule h, whereupon the sleeve g and crown 0, together with the frame and its covering, can be drawn off the lower end of the stick. The cap e (shown separately at Fig. 3) can, if necessary, be specially connected to the socket and crown, such as by screwing, as shown at Figs. 2 and 6, or. the cap 6 may be secured to the socket of the crown by riveting. In the latter case the rivet would have to be removed when the frame is to be re-covered, as the covering f is clamped between cap e and crown c, as above stated.

'The above-described umbrella-stick can be converted into a walking-stick in a very simple manner. brella-frame has been. removed in the manner above described there is fitted upon the stick aa tube '11, Fig. 7, the upper end of which is provided with an ornamental beading lo and bears against the shoulder Z of the han dle Z. The lower end of tube 2' is of reduced diameter, so that the end of the sleeve g can be fitted over such reduced part, as shown at Fig. 8, and the latter can be made with an inward-projecting rim, as shown, so as to fit closely against the thin lower end of the stick. On screwing up the ferrule it upon the stick the upper end of the sleeveg is made to press firmly against the lower end of the tube 1), the upper end 70 of which is therebypressed firmly against the shoulder Z of the handle Z. By this means a useful strong walkingstick is produced which is similar in appearance to anordinary walking-stick and does not show that it is a converted umbrellastick. v

The above-described construction has the advantage that when traveling the tube 41, which is of moderate length, can be readily packed in a trunk when the umbrella is fitted on the stick and also when arranged as a walking-stick.
