BRAKE-OPERATING DEVICE.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan view with the roof removed, showing the platform of a street-car supplied with my device for operating the brakes. Fig. 2 is aview in part section, showing the connection between the operating-handle and the brakerod. Fig. 3 is a view of the end of the operating-handle as seen from beneath. Fig. 4: is a plan viewof the construction shown in Fig. 2 with the operating-handle and associated clutch piece removed. Fig. 5 is a view as seen from below of the clutch-piece associated with the operatinghandle. Fig. 6 is a section on line 6 6, Fig. 3.

My invention is particularly adapted to be used where the sweep or movement of the operating-handle is for some reason limited.
In Fig. 1 I have illustrated my invention as applied to a street-car having the platform inclosed, so as to provide a protection for the operator or motorman. With such a construction the ordinary brake-rod would have to be placed near the middle of the platform or at a distance from the end of the car greater than the length of the handle, so that it could be rotated. When in this position, it is out of the reach of the operator and also takes up too much space and is inconvenient and undesirable in many ways. When my invention is used, the brake-rod can be placed very close to the end of the car, as shown in Fig. l, and all the advantages derived from such position may be obtained.
In carrying out my invention I provide the operating-handle A, said handle being movably associated with the brake-rod in any desired manner, so it can be turned without moving said rod. As herein shown, the brakevrod B is provided with a groove B', and one or inserted in the space or hollow portion A3 and is provided with the projections or wings C', which fit into the grooves or depressions A4 in the handle. The handle is preferably provided with the projecting guide-pieces A5 on each side of the clutch member C. Attached to the brake-rod in any desired manner is a clutch member or piece D,` adapted to engage the movable clutch member C. As herein shown, the clutch member D is provided With the non-circular part D. The brake-rod is threaded, and the part D' is provided with a thread which engages the thread on the rod, thus holding the clutch member in place. The clutch member C is free to move in the handle A, but isnormally forced toward the clutch member D by gravitation or some other means, such as the spring B2. The guide pieces A5- preferably project downwardly, so as to partially inclose the clutch member D. The teeth of the two clutch members are so shaped that when the handle is moved in one direction they engage, so as to cause the brake-rod 'to rotate, and when the handle is moved in 'the other direction they automatically become disengaged, so that the handle moves back free projections or wings C on the clutch member C are also preferably provided with inloo clined faces O2. These several inclined faces are arranged so that they are normally out of engagement when the brake is being operated. When it is desired to release the brake, the handle is moved so as to bring these inclined faces into engagement. The inclined faces on the clutch member C then ride upon the inclined faces F and cause said clutch member to be raised, so as to become disengaged from the clutch member D. The brakerod being then released rotates so as to release the brakes. I prefer to arrange these inclined faces so that they come into engagement when the operating-handle is moved to its extreme limit in proximity to the Wallthat is, to its inoperative position. I also prevfer to provide .a limiting device which preventsA the handle from striking the wall, so as to mar it, and which also prevents the hand of the operator from being injured. Any desired means for this purpose may be used. As herein shown, the bracket F is provided with a lug G and the handle is provided with a lug I-I, the two lugs adapted to engage, as shown in Fig. 2, before the handle strikes the wall.
It will thus be seen that in operating the brake the operator moves the handle from the wall and then moves it back and forth through an arc until the brake is properly set, the two clutch members becoming alternately engaged and disengaged. When it is desired to release the brake, the operator simply moves the handle to its inoperative position, whereupon the clutch member C is lifted .and the brake-rod released.

Abrake-operatingdevice, comprising an operating-handle provided with an enlarged receptacled end, a loose clutch member movably mounted in said receptacled end so as to rotate with the handle, but free to move to and fro, a second clutch member connected with a movable part which actuates the brakes, the two clutch members adapted to normally engage, and a releasing device adapted to movesaid first clutch member with relation to said handle to release or disengage the clutch me mbe rs when the operatinghandle is moved to its inoperative position.
3. A device for operating brakes on vehicles, comprising an operating-handle having an enlarged or receptacled end, a movable clutch member loosely mounted in said receptacled end so as to rotate with the handle, a second opposed clutch member connected with the movable part which actuates the brakes, the two clutch members adapted to normally engage, an engaging part on the movable clutch member, a coacting engaging part so positioned that when engaged by the part on the movable clutch member said member will be moved so as to be released from the opposed clutch member and release the brakes.

A device for operating brakes on vehicles,comprising an operating-handle provided with an enlarged or receptacled end, a clutch member provided with projecting wings and loosely mounted in said end so as to rotate with the handle, but free to move with relation to the handle, a second opposed clutch member connected with the brake-rod, a stationary part or bracket in which the brake rod is mounted, said part provided with one or more engaging parts adapted to engage the wing or wings on the movable clutch member and move said clutch member so as to release it from the opposed clutch member when the handle is moved to a predetermined position.
5. A device for operating brakes on vehilcles,comprising an operating-handle provided with an enlarged or receptacled end, a clutch member provided with projecting wings having beveled faces and loosely mounted in said end so as to rotate with the handle, but free to move with relation to the handle, a second opposed clutch member connected with the brake-rod, a stationary part or bracket in which the brake-rod is mounted, said part provided with one or more engaging parts, having inclined faces adapted to engage the inclined faces of the wings associated with the movable clutch member and move said clutch member so as to release it from the opposed clutch member when the handle is moved to a predetermined position.
6. A device for operating brakes on vehicles,comprising an operating-handle provided at one end with a hollow portion, two grooves or depressions connected with said hollow portion, a movable clutch member loosely mounted in said hollow portion and provided with wings which fit into said grooves or depressions, said Wings having inclined faces, a second opposed clutch member connected with the brake-rod, a spring normally tending to force the two clutch members together, a stationary part or bracket, which acts as a bearing for the brake-rod and provided with one or more inclined faces adapted to engage the inclined faces on the wings of the movable clutch member when the handle is moved to a predetermined position, so as to lift said movable clutch member and release the brakerod.
7. A brake-operating device, comprising an operating-handle, two clutch members associated therewith each having a series of opposed projecting engaging parts or teeth, one rotating with the handle and the other with IOO IIO

A brake-operating device, comprising an operating-handle, a brake-rod, two clutch members surrounding said brake-rod, one rotating with the handle and the other connected with the movable part which actuates the brakes, one of said clutch members being movable longitudinally, and a releasing device Whicli moves said movable member longitudinally with relation to said handle When thehandle is rotated to a predetermined position.
9. Abralre-operating device, comprising an operating-handle, adapted to rotate but fixed against longitudinal movement, a movable clutch member mounted thereon, a second clutch member connected with a movable part Which actuates the brakes, the two said clutch members rotating about the same axis, and a releasing device which releases or disengages the tWo clutch members when the handle is moved to a predetermined position.
