IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-TORGHBS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAYCONCERN: l Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. LAwTort, of the city, county, and Stateof New York, have invented 'a new and improved Gas-Torch; and I do hereby declare that the following isafull, clear, and. exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art toV make and use the sam'erieference being had to the accompanying drawings, rforming part of thisA specification. i p
This invention relates to a new and improved method `of constructing torches for the lightingV of gas,
whereby the alcohol or other iluid4 burned for that purpose is more economically expended. It consists of a.
tube to contain the alcohol or other iiuid, packed tight at the top, and opening at the bottom into a pipe, upon l the end of which is screwed a wick-receiver or tube, covered at the outer end with cap,A said tube or wickreceiver being of greater bore. or diameter than the tube to which the same is screwed, whereby the wick is packed Vso closely as to prevent the leaking ofthe fluid used. It consists, also, in said tube, in which the alcohol is contained, opening at lthe top int a tube, connected with the tube opening from the 4bottom of the same, at
any convenient point in the same, whereby air is supplied tothe top of said tube' containing the alcoholor other iiuid. In the accompanying plate of` drawingsp l i Figure 1 represents a central Avertical section of my invention.
Figure 2 is a side view of a portion of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. l
A is the alcohol-tube; B is a. cap on the same; C is a. pole, to which the tube A is attached; D is the supply-tube; E is the air-tube; F is the wick-holder; G is a cap on the same; H is a wrdnch. The tube A is made of brass or other'snitable metal', of the same form, and in like manner attached to a pole or handle, C, as the tubes of torchesnow commonly in use. Said tube A isprovided, on the top of the same, with a. cap, B, to which saidcapis attached, by a rod, the wrench H, as shown, for the purpose of turning the stop-cocks in gasburners. The cap -A is provided with a screw-thread, by means of which' it is screwed down into the tube A,
said tube A being provided onV the inside of the same, at the top, with a screw-thread, to receive the same, as`
shown in the drawing.` Upon thefto'pV of the tube A, and between the same and the cap B, at 'any convenient' place,-is a suitable packing, so as that when the cap B is screwed down, said tube will be perfectly tight. Into yone side of the tube A, at the bottom thereof, and communicating therewith, isa supply-tube, D. The supplyl pipeD is made of brass or other suitable metal', of the inside diameterof one-quarter of'. an inch, or lof any Aother diameter, and of any desired length, as of the length of six inches, tothe outer end of which is attached a coupling,as:shown, said coupling being provided, on the inside of the same, with a screw-thread, to receive the wick-tube F, saidwick-tube F being provided with a screw-thread on the outside of the same, by means of which said wick-tube F is screwed into the coupling` above mentionefd. Said wick-tube is provided, also, with a iiange, near sa-id screw-thread, by means of 'which the connection of the wick-tube Fwith the tube D is made tight, the object of said screw-thread being that thc wick-tube F may atanyjtixnebe taken oli', when required Said wick-tube F should be of a little greater inside diameter than the tube D, so that when` connectedrwith the tube D, the wick in the wick-t`ube F will be so compressed in the tube D as to form a packing, and prevent leaking. Upon the outer edge of the wick-tube F isa cap or cover, G, secured to the same by a screw-thread, in the ordinary way, s'o. as to protect the wick, and prevent the evaporation of the Ialcohol from the same. Communicating with the, top of the tube A, by one end,l a'sr'shown, is an air-tube, E, said tube communicating by the other end with the tube D, at any convenient point in'fthe saine, as shown, the object of the air-tube E being to supply air, through the tubes D and F, te the upper'part of 4the tube A, to till any vacuum which `would' otherwise be created by the consumption ofthe alcohol from said tube A, and which would stop theiiow of the alcohol from the tube D by the pressure of the surrounding atmosphere. The descending iiuid or alcohol does not completely lill the tube D, but partially only, as shown by the blue lines along the lower partof said tubeyforthe supply of air' (or air and nitrogen combined, resulting 4from the partial combustion of the air) through the wick is notin suf= iicient quantity te permit the rapid ilow 0f the iluid, whereby the air passes above the fluid, as shown by the re'd arrows. The operation is similar to that of gas-torches now commonly in use. r l
Constructed as above-described, it constitutes a safe and convenient gas-torch for the lighting of gas, the
advatitages of which are, that while suicient fuel is furnished to the wick in the tube F, in no position of the torch willany alcohol or other combustible uid contained in the tube A be wasted, and that the short wick in the tube F, by removing seid tube, can be easily taken out and replaced. The tube B may be permanently closed tight at thetop, and a fuel-tube may be inserted in the side ofthe tube B, forfeeding the salue, as shown, when preferred.
I claim as'new., and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A 'gas-torch, for all the purposes for whichY gus-torches are usel, composed of the tube A, and supplytube D, and air'tube E, and un enlsrged'wiek-tube F. substantially as shown and described, and 4forthe purposes set forth.
l2. The air-tube E, in combination with the tube A and the tube D, substantially as shown and Ydescribed.
and for the purposes set forth.
W. A. LAWTON.
