TRACE.
. SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 740,948, dated October 6, 1903.
Application filed February 5, 1F08. Serial No. 141,996. (.No model.)
To al?, whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK BELMONT THO- MAN, of Toledo, in the county of Tama and State of Iowa, have invented a nevir and useful Improvement in Traces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in traces, its object being to provide a trace whichhas no leather parts to wear, one which is pliable and strong, and one which can be readily attached and detached.
My invention consists of a Wire-cable body portion surrounded by a tightly-coiled covering of. metal and detachable haine and whifetree connections.
It further consists of a wire-cable body portion surrounded by a Waterproof covering, which is in turn surroundedby a tightlycoiled covering of met'aLwith detachable hame and Whifiietree connections.
It further consists in certain novel co nstructions, arrangements, and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a detail central longitudinal section. Fig. 2is a front elevation of the complete device. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the trace-body. Fig. 4 is a detail section of one end of trace and threaded thimble. Fig. 5 is an edge view of the rear end thimble. Y
The trace proper is composed of a body portion composed of a wire cable A of suitable length, which has surrounding it a Water- `proof covering A', each end of said cable being passed through steel rings A2 A2 and held from passing back through said rings by having the ends enlarged or provided with caps which are greater in diameter than the opening through the said rings. Each of the rings is provided withA an integral annular iiange A3, surrounding the central aperture thereof. Said iianges are threaded on their outer surfaces and are adapted to screw into internally-threaded thimbles AL1 and A5, the thinible A4 being provided with a reduced or iiattened end portion a4, which is provided with an elongated slot a5, adapted to t over the Whifdetree-hook or other part of vehicle to which the trace is to be attached. The.Y
thimble A5 is provided with an integral curved hook or lug AG, which is provided at or near its extremity at one side With a pin or feather a, projecting therefrom.
The Waterproof-covered cable is again covered With a closely-coiled spring-wire jacket A7, the ends al of the coiled wire being` passed through the opening in the rings A2 A2 alongside of the cable and bent to one side against the face of the ange, thus preventing said ends from being pulled out of the rings.
The front end of the trace is to be detachably and adjustably secured to a steel tug portion B, by means of .which the trace is connected with the haines. This tug portion consists of the steel plate B of suitable length and `thickness and is provided with a numbeil of keyhole-openings B', placed at suitable intervals. The forward end of the plate B is adapted to be secured to the haine or collar of the animal. i
It will thus be seen that I provide a simple and strong trace device which may be readily attached and detached and is strong and flexible and has no leather parts to Wear and break. It is particularly adapted for heavy pulling, and when the back-straps and belly-bands are attached the Weight of the trace Will be taken oii and equally distributed.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-a Y '1.. A trace comprising a body portion consisting of a Wire-cable core, a'coiled-springwire jacket surrounding said core, and end members for attachment to the Whiiiietree and haine.
2. A trace comprising a body portion consisting of a Wire-cable core, a tightly-coiled springwire jacket surrounding said core, threaded confining-rings at each end thereof, and threaded end pieces engaging said rings, said end pieces adapted for engagement with a Whiiietree and haine respectively.
3. A trace comprising a body portion consisting of a flexible Wire-cable core, a tightlycoiled spring-wire jacket surrounding said core, threaded coniining-rings secured to the ends oit' the core and securing the ends of the coiled-Wire jacket, a slotted thimbleengaging the rear end ring, a thimble provided with a hook secured to the front threaded ring, a
IDD
plate engaged by the said front thimble and provided with a crook at its forward end adapted to engage a hame or collar.
4. A trace comprising a body portion consisting of a exible wire-cable core, a waterproof covering surrounding said core, a tightly-coiled spring-Wire jacket surrounding said Waterproof covering, and means at the ends of said body portion for attachment to a whifiietree and harness respectively.
5. A trace comprising a body portion, consisting of a flexible Wire-cable core, a Waterproof covering surrounding said core, a tightly-coiled spring-Wire jacket surrounding said Waterproof covering, threaded confiningrings secured to the ends of the core, and securingthe ends of the coiled-Wire jaeket, and
