of the city of Montreal, Province of Quebec,

Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Lasting-Tools; and I do hereby declare that the .following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention relates particularly to the type of hand lasting-tool disclosed in Letters Patent of the. United States No. 658,765 granted October 2, 1900, to Joseph Adams as assignee of Napoleon Dussault, and the ob ject thereof is to obviate any chance of the plunger projecting at one operation more than the length of a single nail. The great disadvantage of hand lasting-tools heretofore used has been that owing to the plungers thereof having a constant throw the tools could only be used effectively with nails of a length commensurate with the throw of the plunger, the use of a longer or shorter nailresulting in the plunger either projecting less than the full length of a nail or a complete nail and a portion of a subjoined nail.

My invention may be said, briefly, to con sist of means to vary the throw of the plunger, which consists of an adjustable plate carried by the plunger in a position to register with a part rigidly upon the frame of the tool and having a socket or recess into which said rigid part takes, thereby causing said plunger to assume a position in close proximity to the string of nails before each stroke. For full comprehension, however, of my invention reference must be had to the accompanying drawings, in which like symbols indicate the same parts, and wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in sec tion, of my improved hand lasting-tool. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken online 2 2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a portion of the tool and illustrating in side elevation the biting-dog for preventing the string of nails from receding from the position to which it is fed. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the padded end of the operating-lever; and Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are detail sectional views of my improved tool, illustrating theoperation thereof.

This bracket has a transverse retaining-roller 20, and the string of nails travels as formerly in a groove 21. These parts are and may be constructed as shown in said above-mentioned patent.

The plunger is guided in its movement by the angular bracket 2, which is carried rig idly by an extension 3 of the gripping-lever d.

An adjustable stop is carried by the plunger 6 5 and coacts with said bracket in limiting the movement of the plunger. This stop consists of a plate 5, slotted, as at 6, and secured to the plunger by a screw 7, the rear or upper end of this plate bearing upon the bracket 7o 2-when the plunger is in its full back position and having a recess 22, which corresponds to and at times receives the retaining-roller 20, as will be presently set forth.

, A biting-pawl is secured to the side of the extension 3 of the lever dadjacent to the plunger and consists of a resilient strip 8, secured at one end to said extension 3 by a screw 9 and having its free end ground to a knife-edge 10. This pawl is arranged with its biting end im mediately contiguous to the grip ping-dog m of the plunger when the latter is in its full back position and adjusted to accommodate the longest nail.

The plunger-actuating lever isenlarged at its outer end 12 and is of circular form and perforated, as at 11, with an outwardly-contracted recess 13 to receive and hold a flexible pad 14, of felt or the like, which has a hand-cushion 15 in one therewith. and of greater ciro cumference than said pad to overlap and rest .upon the edge of the recessed end of the lever. The perforation 11 allows of the insertion of any sufficiently small instrument to poke the pad from the recess to enable the 5 cushion or, if desired, the pad itself to be renewed. H

Before using my improved hand lastingftool the screw 7 should be loosened and the plate 5 adjusted along the plunger relatively to the bracket 2 to a position to limit the movement of the plunger to the length of nail to he used.

A further advantage attached to my adjustable stop is that owing to the recessed end 22 thereof bearing upon the retaining-roll 20, as it does if the plunger should happen as it returns under the influence of the spring h to move away from the string of nails, as it has been frequently found to do, the edge of the recess adjacent to the string of nails will engage the roller 20, and as the spring continues to draw the plunger back it will be moved by the bearing thereof upon the roller 20 toward the string of nails until the said roller rests in the recess. The gripping-dog m of the plunger is thus held in readiness for the next stroke in the groove 21, in which said string is guided. In use the operation of my improved hand lasting-tool is practically the same as that of the hand lasting-tool disclosed in the above-mentioned Letters Patent.

What I claim is as follows:

1. In a hand lasting-tool the combination with a plunger and a cylindrical part stationary relatively to said plunger, of a slotted plate having a semicircular recessed end, a

screw passing through the slot in said plate and securing said plate upon said plunger in aposition to have its recessed end engage and partially inclose said stationary part,substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a hand lasting-tool the combination with a plunger having an opening therethrough, and a guiding-bracket for said plunger having a transverse roller extending through said opening in the plunger, of a slotted plate having a semicircular recessed end, a screw passing through the slot in said plate and securing said plate upon said plunger in a position to have its recessed end engage and partially inclose said transverse roller, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
