g indicates an edge piece, against which the free end of the strip may be drawn in order to tear it from the body of the strip.
71 indicates a tablet over which the strip may be drawn and which forms a support for the strip, so that the users of the telephone may conveniently use the paper strip for the purpose of making memoranda thereon.
When the appliance is manufactured separately from the transmitter to be applied as an attachment to the transmitter, a clamp 'i is provided, and the strip-roller c or other means for supplying the shielding-strip to be drawn across the month of the transmitter and the means for holding the strip tight across the transmitter-mouth will be carried by said clamp.
In the drawings I have shown means in front of the transmitter-mouth for holding the strip against said mouth. Such means consist in a springpressed ring j, which is preferably the same diameter as the mouthpiece. The said ring is preferably pivoted to the clamp-frame and is pressed by a spring 70.
Zindicates a nut on the shaft-roller c,whereby the roller for holding the roll of paper is detachably attached to the clamp-frame.
In practical use the appliance will be furnished with a strip of paper placed on the roller, as indicated in the drawings, and the free end of the strip will be brought down in front of the mouthpiece or earpiece of the transmitter, and when the user desires to bring an unused portion of the paper across the mouth of the transmitter he will grasp the free end of the paper and draw it up against the edge piece g and will tear ofi a portion of the paper and throw it away or otherwise dispose of it. If he desires to make any memorand um on the paper,ho will do so before tear- Preferably ing it off, using the tablet h to support the paper against the pressure of the-pencil.
The ringj may be detached and dispensed with, if desired, thus to present to the user only the face of the strip in front of the transmitter-mouth.
The nut Z when screwed home holds the roller friction tight to prevent racing of the strip.
The strip pressing rollere and the roller 61, together with the strip-feeding appliance, holds the strip tant in front of the speech appliance a in the usual operation of the device; but the meansj, directly in front of the speech appliance, serves to hold the strip flat against the rim of said appliance to prevent buckling up ,in case the strip should become disengaged from the lower roller or should the upper roller be unreeled too much.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
