To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEW'IS E.WATERMAN, 'a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheel-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct a wheel-box having a closed end forming a support for the axle and a receptacle for oil which will exclude dust and grit.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an isometrical representation of a wheel-box embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a lengthwise section. Fig. 3 is a representa tion of the chaplet as seen from its inner end. Fig. 4 is an isometrical representation of the chaplet as seen from itsouter end.
The main portion 1 of the box is cylindrical in form and has a central lengthwise opening 2. The chaplet is of cylindrical form and comprises the closed end 3, central cavity 4, and bead 5.
In the manufacture of the box the chaplet is first cast and the end of the core for the central opening 2 of the box is held in the mold by the chaplet, thereby insuring the opening 2 centrally of the box. The metal to form the box proper is then poured in the mold, which will embrace the head 5 of the chaplet, as shown in section at Fig. 2, thereby forming a tight joint between the chapletand main portion of the box. e
The object of forming the box in two sections is that the opening 2 in the box may be centrally of the box its full length in order that the box may turn freelyon the axle and at the same time forming a closed end to the box, so that dirt and grit cannot come in contact with the axle, and oil maybe held in the opening around the axle for lubricating the movable parts.
I claim as my invention 1. A wheel-box formed of a main portion and an end, the end held in place by the metal forming the main portion castin connection with it. o
2. A Wheel-box formed of a chaplet and main portion, the chaplet forming the end of the box having an annular bead and held in position by the metal forming the main portion embracing the bead.
3. A wheel-box formed of a main portion and an end, the end having surfaces with which the metal forming the main portion engages when the main portion is cast, thereby forming a rigid connection between the parts.
4. A wheel-box formed of a main portion and an end, the end having an internal cavity and held in place by the metal forming the main portion cast in connection with it.
