L-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 740,341, dated September 29, 1903.
Application filed May 18, 1903.
To all? whom, it may concern:
Be it known thatI, LEwIs E. WATERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock ford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois,.have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheel-Boxes and Methods of Making Same, of which the following is a specification;
The object of this invention is to construct a wheel-box havingone end closed by the use of a chaplet in order that a dust-proof box may be had and one that will hold oil.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an isometrical representation of myimproved wheel'box. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the closed end. Fig. 3 is an isometrical representation of the chaplet. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on dotted line Ct, Fig. 2.
In the manufacture of the wheel-boxes having one end closed the core is located in the mold and supported by one end only, and when the metal is poured into the mold it will warp or bend the core, so that the thickness of metal composing the outer wall of the box will not be uniform, thereby'forming the opening diagonally to the lengthwise direction of the box which binds against the axle in its rotary motion. 7
The main portion 1 of the wheel-box is cylindrical in outline, havinga central cylindrical opening 2, extending in its lengthwise direction. At Fig. 3 is shown the chaplet comprising a cylindrical section 3, having a series of radially extending projections 4- This chaplet is located near the closed end of the box and the metal comprising the box embraces the chaplet, as shown at Figs. 2 and 4, so that the line of connection between the chaplet and the metal composing the box proper will be tight and hold oil as a lubricant for the axle and prevent the ad mission of dust and grit.
In the manufacture of my improved wheelbox the chaplet is formed with the core for the central opening of the box, the core-is supported-in the mold by one end in the usual Serial Ila-157,659. (N0 model.)
manner, and the projections 4: of the chaplet resting against the inner wall of the core serves to support the free end of the core centrally within the mold, and when the metal composing the main portion of the wheel-hub is poured a union will be formed with the chaplet, so that when the core-sand is cleaned away the opening in the Wheel-box will ex tend centrally in its lengthwise direction.
'My improved wheel-box can be used in connection with wheels for different purposes, but is especially adapted for agricultural implements, and can be cast integral with the wheel without departing from the scope of my invention.
I claim as my inventionl. A wheel-box comprising the box proper having a solid end of the metal of which the box is composed, and a chaplet located inside the end of the box, and having sections forming portions of the outer wall of the box.
2. A wheel-box comprising the box proper having a solid end of the metal of which the I box is composed, and a chaplet located inside the end of the box, and having sections forming portions'of the inner wall of the box.
3. A wheel-box comprising the box proper LEWIS E. WATERMAN.
