As shown in the drawings, the car-frame 1 is provided with the rollers 2, upon which the derrick-base 3 is supported and moved, the frame having the flanges 1, which are engaged bythe iianges 3 of the base. The base 3 supports the mast 4, which comprises the struts 4L, v connected together by the compression members 4 and the tension members 4, the truss thus formed being connected with the pedestals 5 by the hinges @,which permit the mast to be broken and folded down. The mast holds at its top a bearing- Vthe holes 7c of this block.

beam 22 required for balancing the load, the movement of the counterpoise being eected by means of the intermediate mechanism, comprising the lever 13, the shaft 15, and the belts 18, operated by the movement of the tie-rods.
In the modified construction (shown in Fig. 8) the mast et is connected to the pedestal 5 by the hinges 6 and by the tie-rod 8 to the boom 9. The boom 9 has its swivel-block 25 connected with a movable bearing or piston 34, adapted to move in the way 0r cylinder 35, formed in or carried by the pedestal, the cylinder containing a medium, as the coiled spring 37, opposing an increasing resistance to the inward movement of the piston, the spring being supported bythe block or cylinder-head 3S. A beam 39, having its inner end connected to the pedestal and its outer end supported by a tie-rod 40, secured to the mast 4, carries the counterweight 42, which is connected to and moved by the piston 3i. The movement of the counterweig'ht to the position upon the beam required for balancing the load may be effected by communicating the movement of the piston, through the rack 43, connected therewith, to the pinion i-l, which drives the spool 45. A belt -16 is wound on this spool, passed over the pulley -17 carried by the beam and connected to the lug 48 of the counterweight. Having described my invention, I claim- 1. In a derrick or crane, a mast, a boom connected to said mast, a counter-beam connected to said mast, a counterweight movable on said beam, mechanism for supporting and permitting the movement of said boom proportionatelyto the weight supported thereby, a rack connected with and operated by the movement of said boem, a pinion connected with and operated by said rack, and mechanism connecting said pinion with said counterweight whereby said counterweight is moved, substantially as specified.
2. In a derrick or crane, mechanism for supporting the load, said mechanism comprising a spring adapted to be moved in proportion to the load, a lever connected to and movable with said spring, an adjustable counterbalance for the load, and mechanism connecting said lever with and adjusting the position of said counterbalance, substantially as specified.
3. In a derriek or crane, a hinged mast, a pivotally-supported boom, mechanism for tying said boom to said mast, a counter-beam, mechanism fortying said counter-beam to said mast, a counterbalance movable on said beam, and automatic mechanism for adjusting the position of said counterbalance, substantially as specified.
4. In a derrick or crane, a mast, a boom having a swiveled support providing universal movement therefor, mechanism for tying said boom to said mast, a swiveled connection between said tying mechanism and mast, and an adjustable counterbalancing mechanism connected with said mast, substantially as specified.
5. In a derrick or crane, a mast, a pivoted bearing carried thereby,apivotally-supported boom, a tension member and a spring conneeting said boom and pivoted bearing, an adi j ustable counterbal ance and mechanism operated by the stress in said tension member for adjusting said counterbalanee, substantially as specified.
G. In a derrick or crane, a counter-beam, a counterweight movable on said beam, a movable belt connected with and moving said counterweight, a mast connected with said beam, a boom connected with said mast, and mechanism actuated by the load carried by said boom for operating said belt and weight, substantially as specified.
7. In a derrick or crane, a car having ways thereon, a mast carried by and movable on said ways, a boom connected with said mast, and a counterbalance connected with said mast, substantially as specified.
8. In a derrick or crane, a car having ways thereon, a folding mast connected with said ways and rolling upon said car, a sectional boom connected with said mast, a beam earried by said mast, and a counterweight movable on said beam, substantially as specified.
9. In a derrick or crane, a car having longitudinal ways thereon, and hoisting mechanism carried by and movable on said Ways, said hoisting mechanism comprising a boom and an adjustable counterbalance, substantially as specified.
