PATENT OFFICE.
ERIK JRGENSEN HATT, OF VEJLE, DENMARK.
LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,867, dated September 29, 1903.
v Application iiled November 4, 1901. Serial No. 81,151l (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERIK J RGENSEN IIATT,
a subject of the King of Denmark, and a resident of Vejle, Denmark, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety- Locks, of which the following is a specification. Y
The invention relates to safety-locks, and more particularly to that kind of such safetylocks to which belongs a key of particular shape or measurement, so that it is impossible to open the lock with any other key,
The safety-lock according to this invention is provided with notches on the main bolt which abut against a hook or the like if the bit of the key used for the opening of the lock is either too long or too short.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the peculiar combination and in the novel construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all asmore fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim. l
In the annexed drawings the construction of the lock is shown. Figure l is a plan view of the lock with the cover-plate removed and the bolt fully projected. Fie'. 2 is a similar view with the bolt partly projected. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the key.
The main bolt a is provided on upper and lower edges with notches b c. Above the upper edge of main bolt a a hook d is movably secured on a pin e and arranged in such beveled'edge of 'a wedge-piece Z, movably mounted in a support m and guided by a pin 5o mproj ectin g through a slot in the wedge-piece Z.v In the left-hand side of wedge-piece l there is provided an arc-shaped incision r as abutment for the short bit p of the key, while an aperture q, provided in4 the lower edge of the main bolt a, serves for the reception of the long bit o.
v The safety-lock operates as follows: In the locking position (see Fig. l of the drawings) the end of hook cl is pressed against the upper edge of the main bolt a by means of spring f. The beveled side of the locking-bar h rests on the beveled side of the Wedge-piece.
l, and the beak-iron t is in such a position that the main bolt a may pass freely. If the proper key is used, the short bit p presses the wedge-piece Z upward when the key is turned, whereby the-Wedge-piece l, and with it the head of the locking-bar h, is slightly moved to the right, so that the hook dis raised from the upper edge of the main bolt ot, which can be freely opened by the long bit oof thekey. If,however,a pick-lock or a wrongkey is used, the short bit of which is either too long or too short, the safety device immediately enters into operation. Witha key the short bit of which is too long the lateral'movement of the wedge-piece l, and in consequence that of the head of the locking-bar h, is exaggerated, so that the beak-iron t' engages with notch c on the lower edge of the main bolt a. and locks the main bolt, while the wedge-piece l will not be moved suciently to raise the I hook d from the upper edge of the main bolt if the short bit of the key is too small, and consequently' the notch b of the upper edge engages with this hook, and the main bolt is locked again.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A safety-lock comprising in combination, a main bolt a with notches b and c i-n its upper and lower edges, a hook d pivotally connected to the lock-case and tending to bear normally against the upper edge of the main bolt, a locking-bar h pivotally connected with the yhook d and located behind the main bolt and porting said Wedge-piece and having a stud In witness whereof I have hereunto set my engaging a, slot in the wedge-piece for guidhand in the presence of two witnesses.
ing the same, said Wedge-piece havingan arc- 1 shaped recess r, adapted to receive the short ERIK JORGENSEN HArl T" 5 bib of a key, lLhe main bolt having a recess q Witnesses:
for the'reception of the longer bib of the key, A. TOUTRUY,
substantially as described. J. C. JACOBSEN.
