HARVESTER-PLATFORM.
i SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,693, dated September 22, 1903.
Application filed November 5, 1902. Serial No. 130,178. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, i? 11i/Ly concorre:
Be it known that I, WILLIS E. MANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Allenville, in the county of Moultrie and State of Illinois, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Harvester-Platforms; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to maire and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a plan view of my harvesterplatform extended. Fig. 2 is a cross-section through one side of the slide-frame s and adjacent parts. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the platform proper contracted. Fig. i is afragmentary rear view of the outer rear end orV corner of the machine with the plat-form in raised position. Fig. 5 is a cross-section on the line 5 5,' Fig. l.
Theinvention relates to folding 'l1arvesters, and mainly to the platform portion thereof; and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts,as hereinafter set forth.
In theaccompanyingdrawingsisillustrated the invention.
The letter a designates the fixed portion of the platform, having the angle bars or rails b, forming an extension of the harvesterframe, and the bottom portion c. Hinged to this portion of the platform at a is the folding section d, having theangle bar or rail section e, and the bottom section f, secured to the rail-sections e. i
To the angle-bars b and c are secured sickle'- guards g, and h indicates the folding sickle, having its hinge at k, which plays back and forth infront of the adjacent ends of the angle-bars b and e, which are hinged together, as hereinbefore stated, the hinge-pin of the hinge 7c being in the same plane as the'hinge of the platform-sections. When the hinge k of the sickle-bar is brought opposite the hinge Z of the angle-rail, the hinges become concentrically alined, so that the portion c7, of the platform and the outer section of the sickle can be raised to an upright position and held by means of a brace-hookor catchrod m,which is connected to the main frame, usually at the rear of the footboard n.
Secured to the angle-ironsb of the main frame are the strap-loops p, which, in connection with said angle-irons, form bearings for the adjustable grain-divider frame s, carrying the grain-wheel t, on a spindle-bearing o thereof. This adjustable frame is practically a sliding frame, comprising the angle-iron branches w and the end connecting-bar portion q, to which the grain-Wheel is attached. The angle-bar portions are adapted to iit against the angle bars of the platform, extending under the same, and are braced in position by the strap-bearings p in such wise that when the slide-frame sis extended to its limit outward it forms a bearing-frame for the hinged portion of the platform, which is fastened thereto by means of a spring-catch e', when such hinged portion is let down level with thexed portion for use. A stop air-2 serves to limit the outward movement of this adjustable grain-Wheel frame. Usually the end bar q of this frame is arched in its middle portion, as indicated at 3, to accommodate the grain-wheel, the spindle-lug thereof being connected to such arched portion. When this adjustable frame is pushed in, after the outer portion of the platform is folded upward the grain-wheel is brought close to the hinge-line of the platform and the frame of the harvester is materially lessened in its width, so that it can be moved more rapidly and easily along roads and through gateways.
In connection with this platform is designed to be used a folding and detachable reel, such reel being a socket-shaft adapted to be seated on and connected to a stub-shaft 6 ofthe binder. One man can readilyand quickly fold a binding-harvester constructed in this manner and' cover it with canvas. There are no bolts to unscrew or remove. The sickle remains in place. There is no necessity for detaching and hitching up the team. Y No extra trucks are required. When folded, the binder runs in the same position on the road as when in the field in action. The invention is designed for any ordinary binding-harvester and Lwhen provided with it the extra framing is outof the way and takes upbut very IOO little more space. When unfolded for use, the platform-frame is strongly braced, by means of the grain-Wheel frame, in its extended position, so that the sickle guard and slideway are kept true for the free action of the sickle.
The operation of folding is as follows: The reel being| removed and folded is laid across the platform. The sickle-pinion is turned a little to bring the sickle-hinge and platformhinge in line with each other. Then the spring-catch at the end of the -folding portion of the platform is loosened, and this part is raised to upright position and secured by means of the brace-hook. The grain-Wheel frame is then pushed toward the hinge-line of vthe platform to its inner position, Where it is y secured. No part of the harvester is deand comprising a catch member m', detachably engaging a seat m2 in an end piece of the foldable section.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
A bisectional harvester-platform comprising the main section, and the outer foldable section hinged to said main section and adapted to be raised into upright position, a hinged sickle having its hinge-pin in the same plane as the hinge connection of said platform and adapted to be brought into line therewith, an independently-movable slide-frame compris'- ing two side bars, and an end bar carrying the grain-Wheel, and a catch device for holding said fold able platform-section in upright position, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIS E.' MANN.
