Be it known that we, ALFRED Fnnnows, THOMAS BHnnnrson, and Hess Drsn, of Maquokcta, in the county of Jackson, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful machine, known as a Loom-Indicator, for measuring textile fabrics during their manufacture in the loom, also for registering the number of threads of weft in any given length or fabric woven; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making apart of this specification, in which- Figure is a front elevation. The construction of the machine is as follows: A represents a circular case, one side of which is perforated to receive the shaft B. On the outer end of this shaft is placed a cylinder or pulley, of wood, C, having its surface thickly s udded with small sharp points or pins. This measuring-pulley is fitted loosely on the shaft B, and has on its inside face a pin or stud, D. Secured to the shaft B, in contact with the inner face of the pulley G, is a short lever or driving-spur the object being to allow free motion in either direction to the pulley, yet only communicating motion 'to the shaft 13, in one direction, by the spur being driven forward by the pin D. On the other end of the shaft 13 is a bevel-\vh eel, F. This engages with the wheel G, of douhleits size and number of teeth. This wheel is attached to the centre arbor H, which passes through the dial K, carrying the longesthand L, indicating on the outer divisions of the dial. The pulley C is made exactlysiiz 'inches in circumference, and the bevel-gears being made two to one, causing the centre arbor to make one revolution to two of the measuring-cylinder, and the hand L will indicate one foot, measuredin each revolution, the divisions on that portion of the dial representing inches and fractions of an inch. In front of the two bevelwheels, supported by the bridge M, are two ratchet-wheels, N and 0. These ratchets are fastened to two hollow arbors or sleeves, revolving one within the other upon the centre arbor H, the ends of both passing through the dial K, and carrying the hands P and Q, the shortest of thehands, Q, being operated by the ratchet-wheel O, indicating on the inner circle of divisions on the dial, and the otherhand, P, carried by the ratchet-wheel N, and indicating on the middle circle of divisions on the dial. The bevel-wheel G has on its face a projecting pin, R, shown in fig. 3. At each revolution of the wheel G the pin R lifts the lever S, and causes the pawl-T to advance the ratchet-wheel None tooth, indicating, by the hand P, feet and yards on the dial. The lever S is kept in contact with the lifting-pin R by means of the spring U. In order to prevent the pressure of the spring U and lever S from turning the hand P at certain points in the revolution of the Wheel G, and to cause the hand to remain steady on the dial, the friction-device, shown at fig. 4, is used, and consists of a circular disk pressing on the surface of the wheel G by means of the spiral spring V. On the under side of the case is a bent lever, W, fig. 2, having its fulcrum at X. One end of this is fastened by means of a flexible cord to the lay or bat ten of the loom, and the other operates the pawl Y by means of the short rod Z, and lever A" and spring B" moving the front ratchet-wheel O one tooth for every beat of the .loom, and registering on the inner circle of the dial the number of threads in-any given amount of cloth woven. On the face of the ratchet-wheel 0, near its centre, is a pin. This engages with the teeth ofthe gear-wheel K. At each revolution of the ratchet-wheel O the pin moves the wheel K one tooth, carrying the small hand L", indicating on the dial hundreds of threads or picks. The motion of the lever W is-stopped at pleasure by means of the stop-button or look C. In order to set the hand carried by the'wheel 0, without opening the case, the milled-head knob F" is provided on the outside of the case. This revolves the shaft E, cog-wheel D", and this, engaging with the teeth on the ratchet-wheel 0, causes it to revolve, and sets the hand Q to any required starting-point.
The operation of the machine is as follows It is secured to the breast-beam of the loom by means of the clamp-screw H in such a manner that the cloth, as it passes over the breast-beam to the cloth=beam, will be in contact with the measuring-cylinder C. The movement of the cloth, as it is woven, is thus measured and r'egistered on the dial by meansof the handsL and P. When the operative vvishes to know the texture of the fabric, the motion of lever W is stopped by turning the button 0'. The hand Q is then set to a convenient starting-point by means of-the knob F"; the position of the long hand L is carefully noted; then, by turning the button 0 and loosening the lever, apomparison of the relative positions of the hands will determine the number 7 of threads in any given number of inches of cloth, thus enabling the operative to detect, at any time, any vari ation in the Mixture of the fabric, and to make the necessary adjustments of the weights, on the friction-belts, on the yarn-beam, to produce a fabric of uniform texture.
