WIRE-MATTRESS STRETCHER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,568, dated September 22, 1903. Application filed October 9, 1902. Serial No, 126,620. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JEROME B. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansing, inthe county of Ingham and State of Michigan, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Mattress Stretchers; and I do declare the following to be a full,

1 clear, and exact description of the invention,

such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention is an improved wire-mattress stretcher especially adapted for use in connection with mattresses which are made of woven-wire fabric for stretching the same; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of devices hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a Wire mattress provided with my improved stretching device. Fig. 2 is a veriicallongitudinal sectional view of the same. tal sectional view taken on a plane indicated by the line a a of Fig. 1.

In the embodiment of myinvention here shown the numeral 1 designates a sidebar of the mattress, and 2 designates a stretcherbar, in the present instance the head-bar of the mattress. The said stretcher-bar comprises a pair of sections '3 4,.hetween which one end of the mattress fabric 5 is secured. On the under side of the stretcher-bar is a plate 6. In practice one of these plates is employed at each end of the stretcher-bar. The said plate is preferably made of metal and is provided on its upper side at its ends with upstanding lugs 7 8, which form flanges and coact with the plate to form a seat fort-he reception of the stretcher-bar. It will be observed by reference to Figs. land 2 of the drawings that the opposing inner sides of these flanged logs are inclined and converge downwardly, so that the same clamp the sections of the stretcher-bar between them and cause the said sections of the stretcher-bar to bind tightly on the end of the mattress fab-v ric. A screw 9 may be employed also to secure the stretcher-bar on the plate, the said screw passing through the lug clamp 7, through the section a of the stretcher-bar, the mattress fabric, and entering the section 3 of the stretcher-bar. On the under side of Fig. 3 is a horizon-p the stretcher bar plate, at the inner end thereof, are a series of ratchet-teeth 10. A stud 11 depends from the stretcher-bar plate, near the outer end thereof, and is preferably disposed midway between its sides, and at the lower end of the said stud is formed an inwardly-extending arm 12.

In the upper side of the side bar 1, at the end-thereof, is recessed a plate 13. .The said plate is preferably made of metal and is provided on its upper sideat-its central portion with a series of ratchet-teeth 14, which engage with the ratchet-teet-h of the stretcherbar plate and coact therewith to secure the stretcher-bar plate, and hence the stretcherbar, at any. desired adjustment, it being understood that the stretcher-bar is movable longitudinally on the said bar, and hence enahling the mattress fabric to be tightened or stretched to the requisite tension. The'side bar is provided near its end with a vertical longitudinal slot 15. The plate 13 is provided with a slot 16, which is coincident with the slot 15. A bolt 17 passes through the stretcher-bar, the stretcher-bar plate, operates in the slots of the said bar and its plate, and is provided at its lower end with a nut 18. which constitutes a stretcher element and is of my invention here shown is provided with a plurality of openings 24, adapted for the reception of the upper end of a stretcher-lever 25, which may be either of the form here shown or of any other suitable construction. In operation this lever bears against and is fulcrumed on one end of the side bar, as shown in, Fig. 1.

It is thought the operation of my invention will be fullyunderstood from the foregoing description, in connection with the drawings.

I do not desire to limit myself to the precise construction and combination of devices hereinbefore shown and described, as it is'evident that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scopeof the appended claims.

Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In combination with a side bar and an end bar of a wire mattress, said side bar having a vertical, longitudinal slot therein, plates on the opposing sides of said bars and having coa'cting ratchet-teeth,said side-bar plate havof the link from the latter, substantially as described.

2. In a device of the class described, the

combination with a. side bar and an end bar having mutually-engaging ratchets, a stretcher-link detachably connected to the end bar, and a bolt slidably connecting said bars together, said bolt coactiug with the linkat-taching means to normally prevent detachment of the stretcher-link, substantially as described.

3. The combination with a mattress side bar, of a stretcher-bar slidable thereon, means to connect them together, and a stretcher element detachably connected thereto and normally locked thereto by the said connecting means, substantially as described.

4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a side bar plate and a stretcher-bar plate, having mutually-engagin g ratchet-teeth, said stretcher-bar plate having a stud to bear and slide on the side-bar plate, a stretcher element engaged by the stud, and means, slidably connecting the said plates together and coactiug with the stud to prevent the detachment of the stretcher element, substantially as described.
