PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST H. LORENZ, or cHIoAeo, nLmols Assreuon TO WILLIAM J. WATTERS, 0F onroAco, ILLINOIS.
BINDER-FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent no. 739,552, dated September 22, 1903.
Application filed February 9, 1903. Serial No. 142,479. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: 7 Be it known that I, AUGUST H. LORENZ, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicage, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binder-Frames, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to novel improvements in binder-frames of the kind employed for holding loose, leaves or sections; and its object is to provide a frame of simple and inand quickly adjusted to bind leaves or sections securely together or release them to permit of their removal.
With these and other ends in view the invention contemplates a frame composed, essentially, of a back and two cover sections, a lever pivotallymounted on the back section and connected at its ends by toggles with the coversections, and a screw operatively connected with the levers for actuat ing the levers to adjust the coversections relative to the back section.
' In the accompanying drawings I have shown one way in which the invention may be embodied, and referring thereto-- Figure 1 shows the inside of a frame, partly in section, with the covers thrown back and broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. -Fig.'3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 shows a modification of a detail of theinvention. Fig. 5 is a detail view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures, 1O designates the back section and 11 12 the two cover-sections, which together constitute the principal parts, of the frame and may be constructed in any suitable manner and varied in size, shape, and proportions, as desired. The cover-sections are provided with inwardly-extending ends 13, which slide inside of the upturned ends 14 on the back section, and guide-plates I 16 are fastened to theback section and overlap the cover-sections, as clearly shown inotally secured to the back section at or about I its middle and has its ends connected by links 1818 with toggle-levers 19 19,which in turn are connected at their outer divergent ends to the cover-sections adjacent to their ends. The links may be connected with the toggle-levers in a variety of difierent ways, and the particular construction of devices for operating the lever 17 and toggles may be changed in various ways. 1 preferably provide a single screw 20, which is. mounted in bearings 21 of a suitable character and arranged longitudinally of the'frame between one end thereof and the lever l7,with its head 22 located, preferably, inside of the upturned end 14 of the back section, so that access thereto can be had with an operating-key through an opening 23in said end. A collar 24 is mounted to travel on the screw, and
the converging ends of the levers l9 and the outer end of the link 18' are suitably connected with the collar to be actuated as the collar is moved back and forth by the turning of the screw. I have shown, Fig.3, the collar provided with a pin or post 25 to form a pivot for the toggle-levers and link, and this pivot is arranged on the underside of the collar; but I do not limit myself to this construction and arrangement, for obviously the levers and link may be connected with the collar on'its upper side and in other ways than that shown without departing from the invention. In Fig. 4: I have shown another way of connecting the collars with the levers and link, the difierence being that the levers are connected to the collar atits sides and the linkis connected to the collar on its top. At the other end of the frame the toggle-levers 19 are connected with the link 18 by a pin 26 or in any suit- The movement of the operative parts of the invention heretofore described will be apparent from the description and the drawings, and it will be observed that the operation is very simple and that the pressure applied can be increased or diminished, as desired. When the screw is turned, the actuating-lever 17 will be swung on its pivot to communicate a contractile or expansive action to the toggles at each end of the frame. As the toggles are actuated simultaneously and are guided in the same plane, the side sections will be moved correspondingly. The lever device for actuating the side sections can be operated to produce a greater or less pressure upon the interposed leaves, as desired, and this pressure may at all times be sufficient to hold the leaves in proper place and prevent their disarrangement or dislodgement.
The leaf-rests comprise telescoping tubes 30 and pins 31, attached to the cover-sections, and are preferably arranged with the tubes and pins alternating on each section.' The covers 32 are connected with the cover-sections in any suitable manner.
My improved binder-frame can be manufactured inexpensively and in a great variety of sizes and shapes for difierent purposes, and it comprises only a few parts, which are arranged to operate in a simple and efiective manner.
I do not limit myself to the particular construction and arrangement of parts nor to the details herein shown and described, for obviously many changes can be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages of the invention, and I reserve the right to make all changes as fairly fall within the scope of the invention without departing from its principles.
While the invention isprimarily intended as a binder for loose leaves, it is apparent that the uses of the invention are not limited in this particular, and it may be employed for holding sections, signatures, newspapers,
magazines, or, in fact, any articles which are 2. A binder-frame comprising a back section and two cover-sections, a lever pivoted to the back section at or about its middle, toggle-levers at the ends of the frame and having their diverging ends pivotally connected to the cover-sections and their converging ends connected with said lever, and a screw for operating the levers.
3. A hinder-frame comprising a back section and two cover-sections, a lever pivotally mounted on the back section, a toggle at eachv end of the frame having its diverging ends pivotally connected to the cover sections, links pivotally con nectin g the converged ends of the toggles and the ends of the links, and means for operating said levers.
at. A binder-frame comprising a back section and two cover-sections, a lever pivotally mounted on the back section, a toggle at each end of the frame having its diverging ends pivotally connected with the cover-sections, links connecting the converged ends of the toggles and the ends of the lever, and a screw for operating said levers.
5. A binder-frame comprising a lever pivotally mounted on the back section between the ends of the frame, toggles connected with the cover-sections and the ends of said lever, and a screw arranged between said lever and one end of the frame for operating the levers.
6. A binder-frame comprising a back section and two cover-sections, a lever pivotally mounted on the back section between its ends, a toggle at each end of the frame pivotally connected to the cover-sections and one end of said lever, and a screw arranged between said lever and one end of the frame and connected with the lever for simultaneously operating the toggles.
7. A binder-frame comprising a back section and two cover-sections, a lever pivotally mounted on the back section, a toggle at each end of the frame pivotally connected with the cover-sections and with the lever, a screw arranged between the lever and one end of the frame, and a collar traveling on said screw and connected with the lever.
8. A binder-frame comprising a back sec- ICC tion and two cover-sections, a lever pivotally mounted on the back section, a toggle at each end of the frame pivotally connected to the cover-sections and to the lever, and a guide on the back section for each of said toggles.
9. A binder-frame comprising a back section and two cover-sections, a lever pivotally mounted on the back section, a toggle at each end of the frame having its diverging ends pivotally connected with the cover-sections and its converged ends pivotally connected with the lever, a slotted guide-plate for one of said toggles, a screw for operating the levers, and a collar traveling on the screw and 1 connected with the converged ends of the other toggle and with said lever.
AUGUST I-I. LORENZ.
